Supporting Student Learning: Learning How to Learn

Presentation Abstract

Learning strategies that may have served students well in secondary education do not always transfer well to an environment that requires self-regulation. In fact, many strategies encourage surface learning (memorization) of concepts—especially in University courses requiring large amounts of disciplinary vocabulary—making it difficult to apply knowledge to new learning environments. This workshop introduces participants to a new course designed around learning strategies for student success. An overview of the course will set the stage for a hands-on exploration of strategies participants can introduce to their students to support their own learning.
