Evaluating resources: How and Why

Hi everyone,

I did a workshop on evaluating resources this week in the Writing Centre, and the PowerPoint is now in your D2L MBA/PMBA English Language Support course.

Click on Course Materials, then click on Content. Scroll down to and click on Reading and you’ll find a ‘VIU Writing Centre Workshop: Evaluating Resources’ PowerPoint file.

Download it to your desktop if you want to use the links in file.

For those who missed ACADEMIC INTEGRITY WORKSHOP 2 FRIDAY JANUARY 23RD 2:00 to 3:30 200/203

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Thank to those of you who attended the workshop last Friday Jan 28, and my apologies to those who had conflicts with this day and time.

The materials used are now in your D2L MBA/PMBA English support file; consequently, you can review them when you have the need and/or the time.

See you soon,

The second Academic Integrity workshop is going to be on Friday January 23rd in building 200, room 203 from 2:00 to 3:30.

We’ll do a quick review from the first workshop, and then continue with some paraphrasing exercises and APA practice.

This is not a presentation; consequently, you will be working in pairs, groups, and sometimes individually.

The objective is to do ‘hands on’ paraphrasing and APA citations.

Please bring a dictionary or thesaurus for synonyms.

Also, if you came to the first Academic Integrity workshop, please bring the handout ‘Disruptive Technology Reconsidered: A Critique and Research Agenda’ since it has a ‘Short Guide to APA’ attached. If you don’t have it, don’t worry, I’ll bring extras.

If you’re bringing a laptop or tablet, bookmark an APA reference site. For example:

Purdue University: OWL

Ashford University:

Also, here’s a good online dictionary:

When you enter a business term, scroll down and choose the meaning from the ‘Business’ category. This will reduce the risk of choosing a synonym with the incorrect meaning.

Please tell a friend if you see this post!

See you Friday!

The W’s of Academic Integrity

There will be a workshop for MBA students on ‘The W’s of Academic Integrity’ on January 8th from 11:30 to 1:00 in building 255 room 115.

Come and find out what this means in Canadian academic culture so you can recognize an issue before it becomes a problem. But more importantly, come and find out where to get help and, as a result, find out the benefits of working ‘smart’.

Next week’s MBA English Support schedule

MBA Students please note the altered schedule next week because Les will be away on Friday, and Tuesday is a holiday.   I have added drop-in time on Monday, and appointments on Wednesday.

You can see this revised schedule and book appointments by visiting the MBA English Support calendar here.

Please plan ahead as I usually get very busy near the end of the semester.
