SoSc Grad Info Night, Nov 12

The Sociology Students’ Union is organizing a Social Sciences Graduate Information Night.

WHEN: November 12 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
WHERE: Building 355, Room 211 (the lounge), Nanaimo campus.

The event is multidisciplinary with faculty representation from SoSc departments.

Pizza will be available from 5:30 PM and participants will be seated for the event to begin at 6:00 PM. Introductions (5-minutes each) by various instructors will include mention of credentials, graduate and work experience, etc.

‘Heritage Basics’ Presentation, Oct 15

As part of the City of Nanaimo’s Heritage Conservation Program review and update, Heritage BC will be providing a FREE two-hour public presentation entitled “Heritage Basics”.

WHEN: Thursday, October 15, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm
WHERE: Nanaimo Museum (100 Museum Way)

The presentation will introduce the basic legislative overview of heritage conservation for local governments in BC, introduce values based management for heritage conservation and planning, the benefits of heritage conservation (social, environmental, economic), and the intersections between heritage conservation and sustainability. Participants will gain an understanding of values centred heritage conservation, including benefits, challenges, opportunities and possible next steps for Nanaimo. No heritage background is necessary.

Hosted by the City’s Culture and Heritage Department, this workshop is free and open to the public. No RSVP necessary.


What is Heritage BC?
Heritage BC is a province-wide, not-for-profit, charitable organization supporting heritage conservation across British Columbia through education, training and skills development, capacity building in heritage planning and funding through the Heritage Legacy Fund. HBC is passionate about building links between heritage conservation and tourism, economic and environmental sustainability, community pride and an appreciation of our common history.

Why is the City looking to update and review its Heritage Conservation Program?
The Nanaimo Heritage Strategy was completed in 1994, and in 1998 a Heritage Action Plan was developed. It remains important to periodically review and update this plan to reflect the City’s current priorities while identifying future opportunities. This Fall represents the third review of the plan (now known as the Heritage Conservation Program). The review reflects the approaches and commitments made through the 2014-2020 Cultural Plan for a Creative Nanaimo to engage the community with its culture and heritage in various ways to ensure currently identified priorities and partners are still relevant and to identify areas where we can work better and / or differently with our partners and the community.

  • What do you value most about Nanaimo’s heritage?
  • How could the City better connect “culture” and “heritage”?
  • In your opinion, are there any policy or action improvements that would strengthen the current Heritage Conservation Program, or expand its scope? If so, what are they?
  • Could the City improve the way it celebrates, remembers or promotes Nanaimo’s heritage? If so, how?

You are encouraged to share your comments (at the October 15 workshop and / or through a short online survey). The results of the public input will be presented to City Council in the form of a summary report on the status of the program and recommendations on how best to integrate the program with the policy objectives of the Cultural Plan.

BC Archaeology Forum 2015

For those with an archaeology interest, this is a “must” attend event.  It’s local, i.e., in Vancouver!

Friday, October 16 is a special full-day round-table focussing on archaeological repositories. Please complete  Repositories Round-table and Registration Forms. This event takes place at the Musqueam Community Centre in Classroom 1. Questions about this round-table, please contact Patricia Ormerod, (604) 822-2567.

There is a $15 fee for this round-table; includes snacks and lunch.

Saturday, October 17 is the main day of the Forum and takes place at the Musqueam Cultural Education and Resource Centre, 4000 Musqueam Avenue. Please complete the Registration Form.

The day will begin with a Welcome and continue with panels and presentations. This year, especially welcomed are panels/presentations focussing on 1) Indigenous heritage – challenges and ways to move forward, 2) Heritage Landscapes, and 3) Place and Memory.

There is a $20 registration fee for the forum; includes snacks, a hot lunch, facilities rental, etc.

On Saturday evening there will be a Salmon Feast. There is an additional charge of $25 for this meal.

Sunday, October 18  tours of c̓əsnaʔəm, the city before the city at the Musqueam Cultural Resource and Education Centre, the Museum of Anthropology and the Museum of Vancouver will be organised.

SfAA Student Awards

The Society of Applied Anthropology is meeting almost in our backyard in 2016; it’s in Vancouver at the Westin Bayshore, March 29-April 2.  The theme is Intersections.

Queen’s Young Leader Award

The Queen’s Young Leader Award recognises and celebrates exceptional people aged 18-29 from across the Commonwealth, who are taking the lead in their communities and using their skills to transform lives. Winners of this prestigious Award will receive a unique package of training, mentoring and networking, including a one-week residential programme in the UK during which they will collect their Award from Her Majesty The Queen. With this support, Award winners will be expected to continue and develop the amazing work they are already doing in their communities.

AAA-AD Student Awards – Apply!

If you are planning on attending the American Anthropological Association annual meeting, held in Denver, CO, consider applying for these awards.  These are specific to the Archaeology Division.  More than one award is available in each of the two categories!!

Student Diversity Travel Grant: Four awards of up to $600 are available to help cover the travel costs associated with attending the AAA meeting. These grants are intended to increase participation in AAA sessions and in archaeology more widely by students from historically under-represented populations. African American, Alaskan Native, American Indian or Native American, Asian American, Latino and Latina, Chicano and Chicana, and Pacific Islander students in archaeology are encouraged to apply for these travel grants. Student Membership award: The AD awards the next year’s membership in both AAA and AD to up to 20 students who present archaeological papers or posters at the annual meeting. All undergraduate and graduate students who present an archaeological paper or poster at the annual meeting are eligible to apply for this award. Developing a skill set

Wondering about finding that dream job; well besides your degree, you need a particular skill set.  These can be developed through the courses taken but also through volunteering.

Below is a list of the requisites for a position, entitled, Civic Engagement Associate.  I’ve selected this as an example since, quite often, there are students seeking employment with an NGO.  Some of the particulars are related to the organisation itself but you can generalise how certain criteria are applied.

  • Strong cross-sectional analysis around civil rights issues related to civic engagement activities (including naturalization process and voter mobilization), race relations, immigration, economic development, access to institutional and non-institutional resources and hate crimes within the framework of these issues impacting specific communities.
  • A proven track record of successful community or labor organizing or at least 3 years leading campaigns.
  • History of demonstrated experience in leading community based advocacy efforts within culturally diverse communities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently to provide hands-on project management through all phases of project development process:  Research, planning (development of time-lines, work plans, and budget), implementation, tracking, and evaluation.
  • Experience with presentation, facilitation and training to small as well as large groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to write in an accurate, concise, and audience appropriate manner on complex public policy issues.
  • Serve as the primary staff liaison and support to the advisory groups for each of the projects/programs assigned.

Additional desired qualifications:

  • At minimum, undergraduate degree in political science, sociology, psychology, anthropology, a related field, or commensurate experience.
  • Strong public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Strong organization and time management skills.

Writing, speaking publicly, and critical analysis are all found in the classroom, including the ‘dreaded’ group work.  Since some jobs, like this, ask for a proven track record, this is where volunteerism comes into play.  Also remember that you will be asked for referees.  In this particular case, FOUR professional references and two personal were requested. This means you need to develop relationships with those who will vouch for your expertise/skill set.  You don’t have to be best buddies with your professor but s/he should know you well enough to remember who you are and something about your interests and abilities.

Check out the podcast 15 Questions with an Archeologist.  This was launched last year (2014) by the National Park Service (NPS) Southeast Archeological Center.  From the introductory podcast: “This podcast is an interview that seeks to ask as many archeologists as possible the same 15 questions. These questions are designed to cover the areas in which archeologists are most often queried. They are also design to provoke though and commentary on our profession.”

NOTE: If you are wondering about the spelling of archaeology, i.e., ‘ae’ versus ‘e’, read Barbara Little’s explanation posted online through the Society for American Archaeology.  A simplification is to say it is British versus American spelling.

CASCA: Richard F Salisbury Award

APPLICATION INFORMATION

Eligibility: Applications can be made by any student member of CASCA undertaking doctoral level research in the field of anthropology at a Canadian university. Preference will be given to those who have completed their comprehensive examinations, have approved thesis proposals and are within one year of beginning fieldwork. CASCA recognizes that some eligible candidates may not be studying in anthropology programs, however all candidates must be members of CASCA when making their applications. The intent of the award is to assist with fieldwork expenses.

Criteria: An outstanding academic record and an excellent research proposal with innovative scholarly import and social relevance.

Value: $2000

Deadline: All application materials must be submitted electronically by 1 February 2015
