The Daryl Duke Prize is an annual $25,000 prize awarded for excellence in a screenplay for a not-yet-produced long-form dramatic film telling a fictional story.

Submissions must be received before 5:00 pm Eastern time on September 30, 2017.

CFP: Contingent Horizons

York University has a peer-reviewed student journal of anthropology, Contingent Horizons.  It is seeking scholarly and creative works of academic excellence by undergraduate and graduate students.  For its fourth volume, the theme is Public Anthropology.

Here’s your opportunity to get published or to serve as a peer reviewer.  From the promo, read on!!

1) Submissions (Theme: Public Anthropology) 

We are accepting submissions of original works that pertain to the discipline of anthropology, specifically relating to the issue’s theme of Public Anthropology.  Authors of works that relate to broader public concerns, as well the intersections between social justice and anthropological theory, are strongly encouraged to submit. Essays could address, for example: social movements, health and illness, politics, environmental concerns, identities, development and displacement, migration and movement, decolonization, knowledge systems, public affects, technoscience, art and aesthetics, and activism. Submissions can include but are not limited to: ethnographic research papers, literature reviews, photo essays, and creative writing.

We are also looking for students to write brief book reviews of current anthropological or ethnographic works relevant to public anthropology published between 2016-2017. Students of anthropology and related disciplines are encouraged to submit their work.

The deadline for submissions is Friday, October 13th, 2017. Please review the Contingent Horizons Submission Guidelines prior to submission.

2) Peer Reviewers:

We are recruiting both undergraduate and graduate students who are willing to act as peer reviewers between October 2017-April 2018. Each peer reviewer will be asked to provide substantial and constructive feedback about the content of a maximum of 1-2 submissions.

Women’s Human Rights Education Institute

If you are interested in becoming a Human Rights educator, looking into the International Human Rights Training Programs offered by the Women’s Human Rights Education Institute might be a next step for you.

From its webpage: “The Women’s Human Rights Institute helps participants develop a practical understanding of the UN Human Rights system and learn how to apply a women’s human rights framework to a multiplicity of issues. Participants will develop practical facilitation skills to help them become human rights educators in their own regions and organizations.”

CASCA news: New undergrad membership category

CASCA has introduced a new undergraduate student membership category (ony $25 annually). Membership comes with online access to Anthropologica and undergraduate members are eligible to participate in the annual conference. CASCA student members are added to the member list and receive regular updates on Canadian Anthropology community activities, news and opportunities and can participate actively in CASCA surveys and votes.

Former student publishes work begun while at VIU

Older news, still from this year!

Our very own Nancy Greene publishes the research that she began while a student at VIU (when it was Malaspina University-College).  It took her a decade to complete.

Stephen Hume, Vancouver Sun, reports on her study but also how this research became very much a community project.  Nancy had the support of the Comox Valley community: financial and volunteers.  Hume describes her research as “a triumph of citizen science.”

Vancouver Park Board first municipal body in Canada to hire in-house archaeologist

Exciting news! Vancouver Parks Board hires in-house archaeologist, Geordie Howe.  This is definitely a first in BC and gives hope that other municipalities will consider hiring archaeologists.  The hire was the result of one of the recommendations from the Truth and Reconciliation Actions.

Note that Geordie has a B.A. and through his years of work in the field has gained the respect and reputation he has.

Brunei Darussalam Government Scholarships

The Commonwealth of Learning (COL), working in partnership with the Brunei Darussalam Government, wishes to announce Master’s Degree scholarships for five people from Commonwealth countries, preferably working in Higher Education Institutions or Departments of Higher Education, to study on a full-time basis in Brunei Darussalam for one or two years.

The scholarships are available for programmes commencing in July/August 2016 in three participating institutions in Brunei Darussalam.

  1.  Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD)
  2.  Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA)
  3.  Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB)

Each scholarship covers tuition fees, one return economy air ticket, allowances (personal expenses, food, etc.), and residential accommodation.

Applicants are invited to apply directly to the Brunei Darussalam Government as stated on the Application Form and submit a copy of the complete application package to Dr Godson Gatsha, COL Education Specialist, Higher Education at ggatsha@col.org by 6 January 2016.
