Visitor Services Coordinator
Nanaimo Art Gallery seeks an energetic, creative, and highly motivated individual for the position of Visitor Services Coordinator. Reporting to the Executive/Artistic Director, the Visitor Services Coordinator will be responsible for the daily operations of the Downtown Gallery, Gallery Store sales, administration, and development, and a range of tasks related to visitor services. The successful candidate will have marketing experience and possess superior organizational skills, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and have a strong interest in contemporary art.
• actively recruit and liaise with Gallery Store artists in consultation with Executive/Artistic Director
• maintain stock in the Gallery Store
• process transactions for the Gallery Store
• manage cash balancing and prepare deposits
• maintain records related to the Gallery Store
• manage the promotion of the Gallery Store
• open and close the Downtown Gallery and maintain security
• recruit volunteers
• provide direction to volunteers and maintain schedule
• maintain the reception and gallery area
• process membership applications and renewals
• greet visitors, address enquiries and maintain attendance log
• maintain supplies
• assist with maintenance of website and social media
• identify and implement changes to Downtown Gallery procedure, in consultation with Executive/Artistic Director
• manage facility rentals
• assist in the organization and facilitation of special events including exhibition openings and artist talks
• other administrative assistance as needed
• Post-secondary degree or equivalent in a field related to arts administration, visual art, or business
• Knowledge and experience in retail and merchandising
• Superior communication and organizational skills
• Excellent computer and organizational skills
• Ability to lift heavy objects and understanding of art handling and installation
• Strong interpersonal skills and customer service experience
• Passion for historical and contemporary art practice
• Experience dealing with cash, accounting and budgets
• Valid driver’s license and vehicle
Start Date: June 18, 2014
Length: 12-month contract
Rate of Pay: $15 per hour
Hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 9:30 am to 5:30 pm; some evenings and weekends required.

We are looking for a VIU student to help coordinate the Campus Food Movement in Nanaimo from October 2013 to April 2014. The selected student will join two VIU student coordinators and a national network of peer coordinators, receive an honorarium, resources for every step of the way, and one-on-one staff support from an experienced youth leader in the food movement.
- Plan and coordinate engagement events on campus
- Facilitate Applied Student Research Opportunities
- Coordinate community activities, including:
- Farmer’s Market pilot project on the VIU campus
- Trick or Eat campaign
- Student engagement/awareness events in collaboration with Nanaimo FoodShare
- Host multi-stakeholder meetings and attend weekly coordinator meetings
- Participate and share with the national network of the Campus Food Systems Project
- Be expected to work 4-10 hours per week
- Knowledge of food systems and issues around food (indicate relevant coursework)
- Excellent interpersonal, self-management and organizational skills
- Excellent communication, group work and leadership skills
- Ability to take initiative and engage in active learning
- Openness to new perspectives and desire to do solutions-focused work with a diverse group of stakeholders
- A minimum GPA of 3.00 (B average)
