Time Management

Remember that VIU has a whole set of resources for you on the Learning Matters site! Check out Manage Time and Concentration on the Learning Matters site for more videos, tips, and information about time management.

Time management is critical to your success as a remote learner – especially if you are balancing many demands. It is important to be realistic about what you need to do and how much time it will take. Remember to include in your plan time to take care of yourself – if you are healthy in body, mind, and spirit it will be easier to be successful.

Watch the video below for tips and tricks about how to find a bit more time in your day for school work.

Making a Plan

One part of managing your time is creating a plan for your semester and a plan for each week. At the beginning of the course your instructor(s) will give you a course outline or syllabus that will let you know the dates of your major assignments and how you will be graded. You can use that information to create a schedule for your semester so you know when you will be busy with school assignments. Then you can look at each week and make a plan for when you will have time to work on your assignments to avoid pulling all-nighters or cramming.

Learn more about how to create these schedules here:

  • Develop a Weekly Schedule That Works | KPU OpenTextbook (link)

If you aren’t sure how long some kinds of assignments might take, you can use a tool like The Assignment Calculator from the University of Toronto to help you estimate and plan for larger assignments.
