Taken by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bowersphoto.com\">Rick &amp; Nora Bowers<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The northern pygmy owl nests in tree crevices, these can be naturally occurring or those made by woodpeckers (<a href=\"https:\/\/birdsna.org\/Species-Account\/bna\/home\">Birds of North America<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.env.gov.bc.ca\/wld\/documents\/statusrpts\/b113.pdf\">Darling, 2003<\/a>). While the owls are breeding the nest is thought to only ever be inhabited by the female and her fledglings, the male will not enter the nest and consequently will not be of assistance with incubation (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jstor.org.ezproxy.viu.ca\/stable\/41480735?pq-origsite=summon&amp;seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents\">Frye &amp; Jageman, 2012<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/birdsna.org\/Species-Account\/bna\/home\">Birds of North America<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The female Northern Pygmy-owl will lay her clutch in mid to late April (<a href=\"https:\/\/birdsna.org\/Species-Account\/bna\/home\">Birds of North America<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jstor.org.ezproxy.viu.ca\/stable\/10.1525\/cond.2012.100140?pq-origsite=summon\">Deshler &amp; Murphy 2012<\/a>). At maximum one egg can be laid per day however, it can take up to two days before another egg is laid (<a href=\"https:\/\/birdsna.org\/Species-Account\/bna\/home\">Birds of North America<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jstor.org.ezproxy.viu.ca\/stable\/10.1525\/cond.2012.100140?pq-origsite=summon\">Deshler &amp; Murphy 2012<\/a>). The range in number eggs laid in one clutch tends to vary between 2-7, though the more common range is thought to be around 4-7 eggs (<a href=\"https:\/\/birdsna.org\/Species-Account\/bna\/home\">Birds of North America<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jstor.org.ezproxy.viu.ca\/stable\/10.1525\/cond.2012.100140?pq-origsite=summon\">Deshler &amp; Murphy 2012<\/a>). The eggs will then take about one month to hatch, it is thought that this occurs asynchronously however, this requires further research (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jstor.org.ezproxy.viu.ca\/stable\/10.1525\/cond.2012.100140?pq-origsite=summon\">Deshler &amp; Murphy 2012<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/birdsna.org\/Species-Account\/bna\/home\">Birds of North America<\/a>). It takes another month before they are fully fledged (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jstor.org.ezproxy.viu.ca\/stable\/10.1525\/cond.2012.100140?pq-origsite=summon\">Deshler &amp; Murphy 2012<\/a>). It has been hypothesized that smaller sized females may have less internal costs associated with self maintenance allowing for more resources to be allocated to her offspring (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jstor.org.ezproxy.viu.ca\/stable\/10.1525\/cond.2012.100140?pq-origsite=summon\">Deshler &amp; Murphy, 2012<\/a>). It has been well accepted that early breeders in northern regions tend to have higher success rates as they have more time to develop hunting skills and build up fat stores for winter \u2013 a feature observed across multiple species (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jstor.org.ezproxy.viu.ca\/stable\/2409724?pq-origsite=summon&amp;seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents\">Wiggins, 1991<\/a>). In addition, some have noted that larger sized birds may have reduced maneuverability (<a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/j.1469-7998.1993.tb02668.x\/abstract\">Hamer &amp; Furness, 1987<\/a>).
