The Biology Department will hire a limited number of TAs annually to support its undergraduate programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Duties:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Preparing for and holding labs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Holding office hours (virtual or in-person)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Answering student emails<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Invigilation of exams<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Marking or assisting in marking of assignments, quizzes, and exams.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assisting in management of the course website<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assisting with miscellaneous duties as needed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Requirements:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Enrolled or recently graduated from an undergraduate Biology program at VIU. Graduates from another institution may be considered if no VIU candidate is identified.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Completed at least 75% of their current program of study. Preference will be given to applicants who have graduated, or who have completed all requirements or their Biology program.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A minimum GPA of 3.5 (include unofficial transcripts in application).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Must have previously taken the course they would like to TA or have gained subject matter experience through their undergraduate program.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Demonstrate English language proficiency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Additional Notes About Teaching Assistants:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The teaching Assistant position is for BIOL 121L (Introductory Zoology Laboratory) and BIOL 123L (Introduction to Cellular and Molecular Biology Laboratory).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Must have availability on Wednesdays and\/or Thursdays when the labs are offered.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Teaching Assistants will receive orientation from a lab coordinator covering their role, responsibilities, safety, and course evaluation. Additional training on safe working conditions will be provided through VIU.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Dean\u2019s office will address any matters related to misconduct or discipline of the TA.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wages are paid bi-weekly over 10 pay periods.\u00a0There is a flat rate of pay for each lab section (2024-2025 rates: $190.25 biweekly per 2-hour lab section; $285.38 biweekly per 3-hour lab section).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Application deadline: May 3 (for Fall semester); October 15 (for Spring semester)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/biology\/files\/2024\/04\/TA-Application-Form-2024-04-12.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">APPLICATION FORM (pdf)<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Starting with the 2024-2025 academic year, Teaching Assistants (TAs) will form an integral part of the Biology Department\u2019s undergraduate teaching and learning team.
