Declaring your academic goals with a Degree Advisor is an important step in your degree planning and progression. It helps to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ensure that your student record accurately reflects your intended academic goal(s).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inform your Degree Advisor about your specific interests so you can receive advising information tailored to your academic objectives, including <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/bscadvising\/program-grids\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"4\">program grids<\/a> for different degree options, and assistance using the VIU <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/bscadvising\/goal-planning-system-gps\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"151\">Goal Planning System<\/a> (GPS).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gain access to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.viu.ca\/registration\/reserved-seats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reserved seats<\/a> that have been set aside for students with specific academic goals in some courses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep you informed (via email) about information relevant to your specific declared goals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inform instructors of the goals of students in their classes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Available goals <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your BSc degree will include one or more of the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.viu.ca\/programs\/science-and-technology\/bachelor-science-bsc-honours-majors-minors-and-transfer\" target=\"_blank\">available science Honours, Majors or Minors<\/a>. You can complete a single Honours or Major, a Double-Minor, a Double-Major, a Major-Minor, or some more elaborate combination. NOTE: A Minor cannot be completed on its own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Non-Science Minor can also be added to a science Honours, Major, or a Double-Minor (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.viu.ca\/programs\/arts-humanities-social-sciences\/bachelor-arts-honours-majors-and-minors\" target=\"_blank\">Arts and Social Science Minors<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.viu.ca\/programs\/business-management\/bachelor-business-administration-bba-majors-and-minors\" target=\"_blank\">Management Minors<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples of BSc degrees that VIU students have completed and their required courses are available in <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/bscadvising\/program-grids\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"4\">program grid<\/a> format. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Declaring your goals<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You are encouraged to<em><strong> declare your goals as early as possible<\/strong><\/em> once you know your intended degree plan. Goals can be declared or changed at <em><strong>any time<\/strong><\/em>, including before you start your degree or after you have started taking courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Once you know the major\/Minor you intend to complete, you can:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Self-declare your goal in your VIU student record under under <em>Academics<\/em> \/ <em>Choose Degree Program Options<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contact or meet with your <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/bscadvising\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"119\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BSc Degree Advisor<\/a>. If you are unsure about which goal(s) might be best for you, your Degree Advisor can help guide you through the various available options.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your Degree Advisor will update your student record with your declared goals and set up the <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/bscadvising\/goal-planning-system-gps\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"151\">Goal Planning System<\/a> (GPS) with your declared goals.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your Degree Advisor can help answer questions about course equivalencies, transfer credits, Letters of Permission, and much more.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your Degree Advisor will track waivers or exceptions that may be applicable to you in GPS and\/or your student record.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can contact your Degree Advisor at any time to discuss your degree progression or if you have questions about degree requirements. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your academic goals can be modified at any time to reflect changes in student intent.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Your academic goal refers to the Major \/ Minor options that you plan to complete.
