Join us! Meet with VIU colleagues, learn more about the students we have at VIU, and connect with the staff who are ready to help with your teaching questions.
The event is built around lively discussions with other new (and “almost new”) faculty about what the hallmarks of successful student engagement are, and what tools (technology and otherwise) are available to anyone teaching at VIU.
The purpose of the New Faculty Orientation to Teaching is to introduce you to resources for designing learning experiences for your students (including staff in the Centre for Innovation and Excellence in Learning!), to explore with you best practices for fostering critical thinking in students, and to provide you with an opportunity to make connections across the disciplines. We will not only address several core ideas for teaching successfully at VIU, but also indicate specific ways of engaging students in the classroom and increasing the positive impact of the choices you make as a teacher.
Past participants have been particularly pleased to meet colleagues from different programs from across our 3 campuses and for the chance to share their ideas and hear from others about effective strategies in the classroom and beyond.
What are the benefits of participating in the New Faculty Orientation to Teaching at VIU?
Concrete ideas for:
- Making the most of the first day of class
- Designing classroom activities that challenge students to think critically
- Engaging your students in productive discussions
- Interactions with new colleagues on the culture of teaching and learning at VIU
- Learning about teaching resources, and technologies available to VIU instructors
Breakfast and lunch will be included.
