So you recorded your Zoom session, now what?

The last few weeks we have been running sessions on how to upload your Zoom recordings to VIUTube and how to share your those VIUTube video’s with your students in VIULearn.

There were lots of fantastic questions asked in these sessions. Below is a recording of the main session content. We have also captured many of the questions that came up in these sessions and some answers for those questions.

Does that chat show up when I am recording?

Any text inputted into the chat will not be captured in either the video or audio recording file.

What privacy considerations do I need to keep in mind when recording students in Zoom?

If you are only sharing your videos with students in your class and not externally to the general public or to other students in different classes, you do not need to receive your student’s written consent in order to record your Zoom sessions.

It’s best practice to let your students know as soon as possible if you plan on recording your Zoom sessions and how you plan on using those recordings. Additionally, it’s best practice to remind your students again at the beginning of your Zoom session that you plan to record this session and to give them the opportunity to turn off their video and audio if they do not wish to be captured in the recording.

Students can still engage in classroom discussion when their video and audio inputs are turned off by typing into the chat. You can also pause your Zoom recording and allow a discussion period where students can turn on their video and audio inputs and engage in classroom discussion without being recorded.

How do I find my Zoom recordings?

You can always find your Zoom recording by opening you Zoom application and viewing the Recorded tab. Instructions for how to do so can be found on Zoom’s website here: https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/206277393-Finding-and-viewing-local-recordings

How can I edit my Zoom recording?

VIUTube does have a built in editor that you can use to make simple edits and trims to your video. You can find a guide on how to use the built in editor in VIUTube in the VIUTube Personal Capture: Getting Started Guide which you can find and download on our website here: https://ciel.viu.ca/pages/kaltura-capture

If you would like to do more complicated edits, you will need to use an external video editing software such as Camtasia. All instructional staff at VIU are qualified to receive a Camtasia license. To receive a license for Camtasia, please contact the IT department at ithelp@viu.ca

Please note that The Centre for Innovation and Excellence in Learning does not support Camtasia and we will not be able to assist you with editing your videos in Camtasia.

How can I add captions to my Zoom recordings?

All instructional staff at VIU are qualified to receive a Camtasia license. Using Camtasia, you can automatically generate captions for a video. We would still recommend that you review your automatically generated captions for mistakes and edit any captions as necessary.

To receive a license for Camtasia, please contact the IT department at ithelp@viu.ca Once you receive your license, you can find instructions for how to caption your video here: https://www.techsmith.com/blog/add-captions-subtitles-video/

Please note that The Centre for Innovation and Excellence in Learning does not support Camtasia and we will not be able to assist you further with generating captions using this software.

Can I download a video that I have uploaded to VIUTube?

Yes, you can download the source file of any video you have uploaded to VIUTube by following these steps:

  1. Navigate to https://viuvideos.viu.ca/ and click Guest > My Media.
  2. Login using your VIU Computer Account credentials.
  3. Click on the video you wish to download.
  4. Select Actions > Edit.
  5. Click the Downloads tab.
  6. Click the checkbox next to Source File.
  7. Click the blue Save button.
  8. Click Go To Media.
  9. Click the Download tab.
  10. Click the download icon in the Actions column.

If you do not want other users downloading your source file, you will want to disable downloads once you have finished downloading the source file.

Can students have VIUTube accounts?

Yes, students have access to all the same features as you do in VIUTube including VIUTube Express Capture and VIUTube Personal Capture. To login to VIUTube, students will enter their VIU Computer Account credentials.

How do students share their VIUTube videos?

For assignment submission folders, students will need to set their video’s publication setting to unlisted and then share the link to the video in the assignment submission folder. If the assignment submission folder is set to File Submission, students will need to post the link to the video in a Word or text document and upload that text document to the assignment submission folder. Students will not be able to add their videos to the assignment submission folder using the embed sharing option.

For discussions, students can share their videos either by providing a link to the video or by embedding them into their response using the Insert Stuff button.

Can users share and download my VIUTube videos?

Setting your video to Private and embedding the video into your VIULearn course will help protect your videos from being shared with unintended users. However, no matter what publication setting you use, it is not possible to completely prevent the downloading, storing, and sharing of content that you post online (including your VIUTube videos). It’s possible for users to download and store your videos using external software and tools (such as screen recording software).

If you have any questions about Zoom or VIUTube, please contact us at learnsupport@viu.ca and we will be happy to support you.
