The Centre for Innovation and Excellence in Learning (CIEL) invites you to participate in a two-part Generative Artificial intelligence competition this Fall. The aim of this competition is to encourage faculty to experiment with a variety of generative AI tools to understand their capabilities and limitations, with the goal of improving students’ learning and fostering critical thinking. Additionally, the competition seeks to engage conversations about the benefits and challenges of AI implementation across various disciplines.
The first portion of the competition takes place this October and encourages VIU faculty to explore image-generating tools to create a Halloween-themed image.
To submit an image to the Gen AI contest, please upload your image to this Microsoft Form. Submissions for the contest end on Friday October 25th.
CIEL will then compile and make a blog post of all the submissions and we will share another form where you can vote for your favorites. The voting period will take place for one week and the final winners will be announced on the blog on November 4th. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place will receive a goody bag containing some sweet treats and other swag!
How do I make a Gen AI Image?
There are lots of different tools available that will allow you to generate images using AI.
Please note that none of these tools are supported by VIU. Before signing up to any of these tools, we would encourage all faculty to read the terms & conditions in order to understand how their data is being stored and used.
- Chat GPT: https://chatgpt.com/
- Bing AI (Microsoft): https://www.bing.com/images/create?
- Canva: https://www.canva.com/ai-image-generator
- Gemini (Google): https://gemini.google.com/
- Adobe Firefly: https://firefly.adobe.com/ (available for those with an Adobe Subscription)
Each tool that is available will vary on it’s ability to generate the sorts of images you are looking for. However, one thing you can do to help improve the images that these Gen AI tools are outputting is learning how to write effective prompts that the AI can easily understand. Here are some resources to help you get started on writing effective prompts:

Need Further Assistance with Generating an Image?
CIEL will be offering two sessions this September & October that can help you with creating and generating your image for the AI contest.
The first session we will be hosting on September 19th & October 4th called “Power Prompting for Images and Text”. In this session, CIEL staff will be available to assist faculty with generating purposeful images and text using Gen AI tools for teaching and learning. The tips that you learn in this session can help you generate a impactful image for the Gen AI contest as well! You can view more details and sign up for this session below:
On October 2nd we will also be hosting another Learning Technology Sandbox session. In this session, CIEL staff will have stations set up that instructors can use to generate an image that they can submit to the Gen AI Contest. You can view more details and sign up for this session below:
