Digital Literacy: Tools and Resources for VIU

“Digital literacy is a person’s knowledge, skills, and abilities for using digital tools ethically, effectively, and within a variety of contexts in order to access, interpret, and evaluate information, as well as to create, construct new knowledge, and communicate with others.” (Cited in The B.C. Post-Secondary Digital Literacy Framework).

In April 2023, the B.C.’s Post-Secondary Digital Literacy Framework was released. While a similar framework has been in place for the K-12 system since 2015, the COVID-19 pandemic prompted the development of one geared specifically toward the post-secondary sector.

The framework outlines “the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to participate in digital society, specifically among members of post-secondary communities.”(Government of British Columbia). This includes preparing students for the shift from student to professional as well as the engagement of educators in digital spaces beyond the classroom.

The framework includes eight competencies.

    • Ethical and Legal Considerations
    • Technology Supports
    • Information Literacy
    • Digital Scholarship
    • Communication and Collaboration
    • Creation and Curation
    • Digital Wellbeing
    • Community-Based Learning

What do these competencies look like for instructors and students at VIU?

The CIEL has created a toolkit with examples and supports. For the next 8 weeks we will be releasing a blog post to highlight one of the competencies and provide some examples for how it can be implemented. We are excited to be collaborating with VIU Libraries on the creation of these posts.

You are also invited to join us for 20 Minute Tea: Building Digital Literacy Skills to learn more about the B.C. Post-Secondary Digital Literacy Framework.
