This post is part of an eight-part series introducing the The B.C. Post-Secondary Digital Literacy Framework. Each post will provide ideas and resources for implementing one of the eight thematic digital competencies outlined in the framework. You can read more about the framework on the Digital Literacy: Tools and Resources for VIU blog post. We are happy to be working in collaboration with VIU Libraries on this blog post series.
What does Creation and Curation mean?
A digitally literate person will be able to create or curate accessible digital materials that are specific to different audiences and platforms.
How can you implement this?
Use this guide to make sure your VIULearn course meets accessibility standards.
Map out your course before you start building it in VIULearn. Think carefully about how you want to organize the content and how the flow of your course will be most accessible for your students.
- Most courses can be best organized by week or module.
- Use this Course Mapping Guide if you want help getting started.
Create a visual map of your course showing how the content, learning activities and assessments fit together and lead to the achievement of course learning outcomes.
Use VIUTube to create a video outlining how the course is organized, where the assessments are and any other tools that you want your students to use. This does not need to be perfect and should not be longer than 5 minutes. This will allow you to explain in your own voice how the course is laid out.
Provide the same content in different formats by searching for and curating resources. There are many open resources available that you can use to supplement your course materials. You can also encourage your students to seek out and share resources that they have found useful.
- The VIU Library has curated a list of resources for Open Educational Resources.
Allow students to choose an assessment format that will allow them to best showcase their learning. This is an example of how you can integrate Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in your courses. Learn more about UDL on our blog.
