The Book* Club: Preparing Hearts and Minds

The Office of Indigenous Education and Engagement (OIEE), and the Centre for Innovation and Excellence in Learning (CIEL) are excited to welcome you to the 2025/26 Truth and Reconciliation Professional Development series. The series includes The Book* Club, and the Podcast Club.

This is the best book* club you’ve ever joined! Let’s talk with each other while thinking & feeling our way into being good participants in the ongoing work of Truth and Reconciliation.

How does it work?

You will explore a book* of your choice, while simultaneously investigating your own experiences/perspectives/worldviews. We will provide you with guiding questions to deepen your learning, and a list of suggested activities. On the first Tuesday of the month, while we eat our lunches, we will share the significant moments in our learning. All faculty and staff are encouraged to join.

What counts as a book*?

In our book* club, books include novels, non-fiction, poetry, academic articles, films, children’s books, graphic novels, etc.

Need help choosing a book*?

We have suggestions for you!

Where can I find a book* at VIU?

  1. The VIU Library has many books and resources available, including digital copies for those off campus.
  2. The OIEE will be hosting “come pick a book” lunchtime drop-ins on September 19th, September 25th, and September 26th. We are located the 4th floor of building 180.
  3. The CIEL has a small collection of books available for loan. Drop in Monday-Thursday, 9am-4pm, in building 305 room 512.
