Like many of our colleagues across campus, the CIEL continues to adjust and evolve in the midst of structural changes and a shifting higher education landscape. But throughout its history at VIU, the CIEL has consistently demonstrated agility, commitment, and creativity in challenging times. We’d like to share with the community some new directions and changes that we are working on to support teaching and learning across VIU.
Leadership
In March, 2025, oversight for the CIEL moved from the Provost’s office to the Faculty of Education. The CIEL now reports to Associate Dean, Dr. Marian Riedel, who is supported by the Dean, Dr. Rachel Moll. Additionally, we have reimagined the workload of an existing Curriculum, Teaching and Learning Specialist (CTLS) position to include Chair duties. The team has appointed Dr. Kathleen Bortolin to this position.
Location
The CIEL team continues to work out of its offices on the top floor of the library, in room 512, and have been happy to host a number of you in the last few weeks for discussions, consultations, and project work. If you stop by and find us here, you will also find learning resources, comfortable couches, a good view, and some great discussion. Drop in anytime, or email learnsupport@viu.ca to schedule a meeting.
Embedded Support Model
We are currently envisioning a slightly enhanced method of CIEL engagement at VIU that we’re calling “the embedded support model.” Much like library support, this model sees Curriculum, Teaching and Learning Specialists (CTLSs) from the CIEL paired with Faculties and support areas to provide a key point of contact and collaboration. By being closely aligned relationally to areas across campus, the CIEL hopes to be even more responsive and able to connect our colleagues with the resources, ideas, and people to best support them. This model doesn’t replace other ways of engaging with the CIEL but seeks to increase dialogue and connections across campus related to teaching and learning. We have begun meeting and working with Faculties to consider how best to operationalize this model and are encouraged by what we’re hearing. Stay tuned!
Ongoing learning technology support for instructors and students
We continue to offer support to students and instructors using VIU’s learning technologies: VIULearn, VIUTube, VIUBlogs, and Teams meetings. You can find support resources on our website or connect with us at learnsupport@viu.ca to ask a question or request a consultation. You can even drop by our office in B305 R512 for in-person support from a learning technology support specialist.
Finally…
We know that higher education across Canada is shifting and changing, and we acknowledge the challenges this presents for all of us. It’s not an easy era to navigate. But the CIEL is committed to helping navigate these shifts, and remains focused on supporting excellence and innovation in teaching and learning at VIU. Reach out anytime and stay tuned for more updates.
