This blog post is a reminder for all instructors at VIU that we will be processing the VIULearn Course Cleanup as scheduled in the first week of July 2022. For anyone who began using VIULearn for the first time in 2020, please read on to learn more about the Course Cleanup process.
All instructors are also invited to sign up for one of our sessions to help you back up your course materials so you don’t lose anything you might want to use in a future semester.
What Is the Course Cleanup?
In order to minimize the amount of student data and past courses in our learning management system, the CIEL team permanently deletes courses once a year in the first week of July. This process is the VIULearn Course Cleanup. July 4, 2022 we will permanently delete courses from the following semesters:
- Fall 2019
- Year 2019
- Continuous Intake 2019
- Spring 2020
- Summer (May and June) 2020
- Intersession 2020
What Do I Need to Do?
If you taught a course in any of these semesters and used VIULearn to host content or activities, you may want to take a backup of your content for use in future semesters. Course backups do not contain any student work or student information from your course. This process will allow you to back up just the teaching materials you have created that might need to be reused in a future offering.
If you have student permission to retain examples of exceptional work from Assignments or other activities in VIULearn and are not sure how to save those examples, please contact the Centre for Innovation and Excellence in Learning at learnsupport@viu.ca for assistance.
To get help backing up courses in VIULearn or to learn more about the backup process, please sign up for one of our 30 minute Keeping Your Courses Safe sessions that begin on Thursday April 21 with a face to face session in a computer lab on the Nanaimo campus. You can also contact us to book a private consultation with a Learning Technology Support Specialist to get assistance with creating backups or any other VIULearn questions you may have.
