High Impact Practices (HIPS): Why do they matter?
September 22 @ 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm
Learning is “a form of labour and should feel, to some extent, like a struggle.” How do we get students to invest meaningful time and effort on authentic and difficult tasks? By using HIPs which are designed to make students work at learning so they can integrate their knowledge and transfer their learning to new contexts. This takes thoughtful planning and substantive support for students’ learning journey. When successful, students have reported working harder than they thought they could and feeling challenged to do their best work. It’s a lot of work—but the pay-off is big, for both instructors and students. Want to learn more? Join us in this first of a series of workshops to discuss HIPs: we will talk about how to incorporate collaboration and real world problem solving, and increase student confidence that they can make a difference.
