Want to See Group Work that Really, Really Works?

May 2 @ 2:00 pm 2:30 pm

We’ve all heard the suppressed sighs when we mention group work in our classes. We know why we assign it: to foster a warm community of peers while learning the hard stuff. Some students thrive in a collaborative or cooperative learning environment, while others remain skeptical and even resist openly.

So how do we change this?  Context matters, as do the choices we make as teachers. In this session we’ll revisit the underlying causes of productive and unproductive student collaboration—in any context, whether in person or online—and do a brief “risk assessment” of various “group work” strategies. We’ll also experience some specific practices that allow instructors to reduce those risks and overcome the skeptics, so that our classroom learning culture better aligns with our students’ natural inclination to work and learn together.

Date: Monday, May 2 from 2:00 – 3:30PM

Location: Building 305, Room 509
