Post-Secondary Digital Literacy Framework<\/a>. Each post will provide ideas and resources for implementing one of the eight thematic digital competencies outlined in the framework. We are happy to be working in collaboration with VIU Libraries on this blog post series.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does Community-Based Learning mean?&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>From a community-based learning perspective, a digitally literate person will work with individuals and communities to support digital projects. This can include placing Indigenous or community knowledge and cultural practices at the centre of projects to produce mutually beneficial outcomes.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/assets\/gov\/education\/post-secondary-education\/institution-resources-administration\/digital-learning-strategy\/bc_post-secondary_digital_literacy_framework.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The B.C. Post-Secondary Digital Literacy Framework (p.12)<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How can you implement this?&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Check out<\/strong> the <a href=\"https:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/indigenousdigitalliteracies\/\">Indigenous Digital Literacies course<\/a> available via <a href=\"https:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/\">BCcampus Open Publishing<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/indigenousdigitalliteracies\/part\/community-based-learning\/\">Module 8: Fundamentals of Community-Based Learning<\/a> is a good place when planning to engage in any community-based project. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Adapt or create <\/strong>an open educational resource as class. It could be an open textbook that you make available for other educators and students or a resource that benefits an organization in the community.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Listen to <em>T<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/ciel\/2023\/04\/04\/the-share-drive-ep-22-trust-in-the-process\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>he Share Drive (Ep. 22): Trust in the Process<\/em><\/a> to learn how this has been done at VIU.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Create an assessment<\/strong> that involves working with community partner to digitally promote their services.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Provide students with authentic assessment opportunities<\/strong> that support a community need while using the digital tools of their future profession.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Listen to <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/ciel\/2023\/03\/06\/the-share-drive-how-much-water-do-we-have\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Share Drive (Ep.21): How Much Water Do We Have?<\/em><\/a> to learn how this has been done at VIU.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Have students research and investigate<\/strong> the common digital tools that are used in your discipline. Even if you don\u2019t have access to the same tools, this is an opportunity for students to identify employer expectations and find out where their own knowledge gaps.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Create a Tech Survey <\/strong>in VIULearn that asks students to share information about their digital literacy, access to technology and comfort level in digital spaces.&nbsp; We have created a survey that you can import directly into VIULearn. You can <a href=\"https:\/\/viucanada-my.sharepoint.com\/:u:\/g\/personal\/anwen_burk_viu_ca\/EVE3WrrQGUJAjQf0CIdynrkBtpb9By7pZtKlsJ1tVs3L4A?e=g0cR6k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">download it from OneDrive<\/a> and import it into your course. Our <a href=\"https:\/\/ciel.viu.ca\/pages\/import-course-materials\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Import Course Materials<\/a> page will guide you through this process.
