This course is open to current VIU students and Human Services Professionals of legal age of majority looking for continuing education.
During this 3 credit course, students will learn:
- How to use expeditionary wilderness travel to help youth work towards specific therapeutic goals
- How to manage emotional, behavioural, and physical risk with challenging groups in back country settings
- Basic wilderness living and navigation skills
- Advanced group facilitation and conflict resolution strategies in the wilderness context
- Basics of back country nutrition, cooking, and baking
In addition to credit, students will have the opportunity to earn a flat water canoeing certification through RCABC.
The final project will involve creating a formal proposal to run a canoe/hiking day program with a local youth services agency.
