{"id":1071,"date":"2012-08-13T23:00:21","date_gmt":"2012-08-14T06:00:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/limi\/?page_id=1071"},"modified":"2023-09-05T11:20:19","modified_gmt":"2023-09-05T18:20:19","slug":"glst210-syllabus","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/limi\/courses\/current-courses\/glst-210\/glst210-syllabus\/","title":{"rendered":"GLST 210 Syllabus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Food is one of the necessities of life; we all need to eat.\u00a0 How does globalization affect food production and, ultimately, people&#8217;s lives around the world?\u00a0 Food is the focus of this course as a means to better understand the <strong>interconnections between global capitalism and what we find on our dinner plates<\/strong>.\u00a0 The course also considers local alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>The format of instruction is a combination of lectures and seminar-style discussion.\u00a0 There are films to complement the lectures and readings, as well.<\/p>\n<p>The objectives of this course are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Build awareness of other ways of knowing by exposure to the diversity of peoples and cultures throughout the world.<\/li>\n<li>Identify the local and global impacts of globalization through case studies, past and present.<\/li>\n<li>Identify key concepts associated with the discipline of anthropology, including ethnocentrism and cultural relativism, and how these relate to the process of globalization.<\/li>\n<li>Assess the phenomenon of globalization through economic, political, social and environmental terms.<\/li>\n<li>Critically evaluate resources as presented in various forms, e.g., news media, websites, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Actively participate in improving the human condition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Your grade will be based on <a title=\"GLST 210 Evaluation &amp; Assignments\" href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/limi\/courses\/current-courses\/glst-210\/glst210-evaluation\/#participarticipation\"><strong>participation<\/strong><\/a> (20%), <a title=\"GLST 210 Evaluation &amp; Assignments\" href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/limi\/courses\/current-courses\/glst-210\/glst210-evaluation\/#opinion\"><strong>opinion piece<\/strong><\/a> (5%), <a title=\"GLST 210 Evaluation &amp; Assignments\" href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/limi\/courses\/current-courses\/glst-210\/glst210-evaluation\/#video\"><strong>video short selection<\/strong><\/a> (5%), <a title=\"GLST 210 Evaluation &amp; Assignments\" href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/limi\/courses\/current-courses\/glst-210\/glst210-evaluation\/#exams\"><strong>two exams<\/strong><\/a> (20% each), and a <a title=\"GLST 210 Evaluation &amp; Assignments\" href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/limi\/courses\/current-courses\/glst-210\/glst210-evaluation\/#paper\"><strong>paper<\/strong><\/a> (30%).\u00a0 Exams will be online, short answer and essay question format.\u00a0 Written assignments will be submitted online through <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.viu.ca\/d2l\/loginh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">VIULearn<\/a>.\u00a0<strong>There is no final exam.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>Not attending an exam or submitting an assignment will result in an \u201cF\u201d;<br \/>\nyour final grade is based on completing ALL course work.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Required texts:<br \/>\n<\/strong>Bowens, Natasha.\u00a0 2015.\u00a0 <em>The Color of Food: Stories of Race, Resilience and Farming<\/em>.\u00a0 Gabriola Island: New Society Publishers.
