There will be in-class discussions. If you are absent, you cannot participate. (See VIU\u00a0<em>Calendar<\/em>, General Regulations \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.viu.ca\/registration\/general-regulations#attendance\">Attendance<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Active participation is contributing to class activities; discussion is the primary one.\u00a0 I am interested in the quality of comments and\/or questions raised during discussion.\u00a0 Be an informed participant, i.e., read the assigned articles, review websites, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Please submit a\u00a0<strong>self-evaluation of your participation<\/strong>\u00a0(no more than 250-300 words, through\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/learn.viu.ca\/d2l\/loginh\">VIULearn<\/a>) by\u00a0<strong>December 15<\/strong>. \u00a0<strong>Be reflective and honest<\/strong>\u00a0about your participation, for example, are you engaged with the material, do you ask questions or comment, how have you contributed to make this a better learning experience for you and your peers?<\/p>\n<p>To receive full credit for participation\u00a0<strong>(quality counts!)<\/strong>, you must 1) attend class, 2) participate fully in class activities (discussion, evaluation, etc.), and 3) provide a self-assessment of participation.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong><a name=\"Discussion\"><\/a>DISCUSSION FORUM (10%):<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: revert;color: initial\">The\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: revert;color: initial\">quality of your comments is important<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: revert;color: initial\">.\u00a0The topics are related to what is being discussed in class.\u00a0 Ideally, you should be responding as the semester progresses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>These will be graded as Pass or High Pass.\u00a0 If you submit on time, you will receive for this portion of your grade, minimally, a B.\u00a0 A High Pass is about the quality of your writing and commentary: do you support your statements by example; do your words engage \u2018the reader\u2019?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>DUE:\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">last opportunity<\/span> to submit on\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/learn.viu.ca\/d2l\/loginh\"><strong>VIULearn<\/strong><\/a> <strong>is <span style=\"color: #993300\">December 17, 11:30pm<\/span>.<br \/>\nDon\u2019t wait until the end!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong><a name=\"Opinion\"><\/a>OPINION PIECE (5%):<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nYou are encouraged to learn outside the classroom by taking advantage of on- and off-campus events. \u00a0During the semester, I will post possibilities as I become aware of them. \u00a0Check with me if there is an event that you wish to attend not already identified.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>Attend an event and submit an opinion piece<\/strong>\u00a0(no more than 250-300 words)\u00a0<strong>through\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/learn.viu.ca\/d2l\/loginh\/\"><strong>VIULearn<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;padding-left: 40px\"><strong>opin-ion<\/strong>\u00a0<em>\\ \u0259-\u2019pin-y\u0259 n \\<\/em> n. 1 a: a view, judgment, or appraisal formed in the mind about a particular matter.\u00a0 (Merriam-Webster\u2019s Collegiate\u00ae Dictionary 11th Edition)<\/p>\n<p>As the above definition implies, I am interested in your response to the event. there is no penalty if you do not complete this other than <strong>missing 5% of your mark<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>DUE: <span style=\"color: #800000\">by end of semester,<br \/>\nlast opportunity is December 17, 11:30pm<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: large\"><a name=\"Story\"><\/a>SHARING A STORY (20%):<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: revert;color: initial\">The goal of this course is to provide resources for a virtual exhibit hosted by Nanaimo Museum.\u00a0 Stories are one way to educate the public.\u00a0 Your story should be no more than 750-words; if possible, include an appropriate photograph (with explanation).\u00a0 <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: revert;color: initial\">NOTE: Your story may be selected for inclusion in the museum \u2018exhibit.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Topics <strong>(select one)<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>What does it mean to be (or become) Canadian?<\/li>\n<li>When did you become aware of racism?<\/li>\n<li>For some, they juggle between identities.\u00a0 Comment on being \u2018between\u2019 or \u2018belonging.\u2019<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>EXAMPLES:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/first-person-pronounciation-names-1.6220510\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Is it too late to correct the pronunciation of my name?<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/life\/first-person\/article-growing-up-biracial-in-a-small-canadian-town-is-not-easy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Growing up biracial in a small Canadian town is not easy<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/prince-edward-island\/pei-voting-first-person-1.6177880\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The privilege to vote: Reflections from a newly minted Canadian<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Remember, your words are to engage and connect with a reader.\u00a0 Your voice should come across loud and clear; this is not written in the way you would for an academic paper.\u00a0 The examples provided are longer for the most part; however, they illustrate \u2018story-telling\u2019 with a purpose.\u00a0 They also focus on the questions that I have posed.\u00a0 As always, quality over quantity matters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>DUE: <span style=\"color: #800000\">November 12, VIULearn<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: large\"><a name=\"Film\"><\/a>HERITAGE BC WEBINARS (15%):<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong>You are expected to register as members of <a href=\"https:\/\/heritagebc.ca\/\">Heritage BC<\/a>;
