As you know, the course is a way for international students to learn more about Canadian society by working together with, primarily, Canadian anthropology students.\u00a0 For this reason, each group should consist of <strong>two international students<\/strong> with at least <strong>two English native speakers<\/strong>. The <strong>minimum<\/strong> number of students working together will be <strong>four<\/strong>. I will circulate during class a sign-up sheet identifying group members and proposed topic (the latter may or may not be identified at this point).<\/p>\n<p><strong>CONSENT FORMS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Every project must be approved<\/strong> with a completed research proposal and accompanying forms.\u00a0 See VIU&#8217;s Department of Anthropology <a title=\"Preparation of Ethics Statement\" href=\"http:\/\/www.viu.ca\/anthropology\/preparation-ethics.asp\" target=\"_blank\">Student Guidelines<\/a> for the preparation of an ethics statement.\u00a0 I will review each of your proposals with one other faculty member.\u00a0 The <strong>deadline<\/strong> for submitting your group consent form\/ proposal is <strong>February 19<\/strong>; <em><strong>submit an e-document<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 If you have your consent form completed earlier, please submit it when done; it will be returned more quickly and you can actively begin your research.\u00a0 Those submitted on February 19 will be returned following the &#8220;Study Days Week.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>TOPICS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Senior students should be thinking about possible topics as they have additional time while junior members (international students) have lectures; this does not mean that the topic is restricted solely to the decision of the ANTH 326 students. please bring your issues.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FIELD NOTES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Your field notes <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">and<\/span> recorded observations play a critical component.\u00a0 They are the essence from which you will write your ethnography.\u00a0 For this reason, greater detail is always advisable rather than sketchy notes.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Always transcribe<\/strong> those <strong>scribbles<\/strong> on scraps of paper.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Do not rely on memory<\/strong> to recreate what you saw or did two days ago.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Your notes should be up-to-date.\u00a0 Include the &#8220;who, what, when, where, and how&#8221; responses when appropriate.\u00a0 Details that you may not have considered important may become significant upon reflection and analysis.\u00a0 You cannot always see and be everywhere, but <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">record <strong>well<\/strong> what you can<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Your field notes <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">MUST<\/span> be submitted with your paper <strong>(ANTH 326 only)<\/strong>.\u00a0 Part of your grade is allocated to the receipt of your field notes; therefore, missing field notes will affect your mark.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GROUP PRESENTATION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During the last week of classes, each group (both ANTH 326 and ANTH 112 students) will present their research in a <strong>15-minute talk<\/strong> followed by discussion.\u00a0 Every member of the group will be expected to speak.\u00a0 Remember that this term project is worth 35% and 25%, respectively, of your grade; general participation is worth 15%.<\/p>\n<p>As part of your participation mark, you are to complete a <strong>&#8220;<a title=\"Peer rating of group members\" href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/limi\/files\/2012\/06\/PeerRating-112326.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Peer Rating of Group Members<\/a>.&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0 This is to be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">submitted the day of your presentation<\/span>.\u00a0 Only I will see this rating and I expect students to be <strong>honest in their evaluation<\/strong>, which <strong>includes comments<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>YOUR PAPER<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">ANTH 112<\/span>:<\/strong>\u00a0 The papers of ANTH 112 (international students) will be <strong>5-7 pages<\/strong> in length; each is <strong>done individually<\/strong>. These should be related to the <strong>process of doing anthropology<\/strong>.\u00a0 Be reflective. I do not expect you to do analysis as I am for ANTH 326 students. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Possible<\/span> questions to respond to include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How did your cultural perspective differ, if any, from your partners in viewing events?<\/li>\n<li>What kinds of language problems (verbal and non-verbal) did you experience?\u00a0 Were there misunderstanding?<\/li>\n<li>What do you know now about Canadian culture that you learned from this project?<\/li>\n<li>What role does culture play in affecting one&#8217;s perception of social events?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Like the ANTH 326 papers, <strong>ANTH 112 papers<\/strong> should pay attention to writing style and the issue of <a title=\"Plagiarism\" href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/limi\/extras\/general-information\/#plagiarism\"><strong>plagiarism<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 Your grade will be <strong>based primarily on content<\/strong> (the quality of your commentary).\u00a0 I am very much interested in what you learned by working with the senior anthropology students, as well as, your increased (?) knowledge of Canadian society based on the field work experience.\u00a0 General writing comments apply.\u00a0 Use the <a title=\"VIU Writing Centre homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.viu.ca\/writingcentre\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Writing Centre<\/strong><\/a> and plan ahead by making an appointment.\u00a0 Grammar and spelling will count but I will be lenient compared to my expectations of ANTH 326 students.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">ANTH 326<\/span>:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is a group project&#8211;the overall work is done as a unit, but in any group there may be those who do not fully bear their responsibility.\u00a0 ANTH 326 students have an option of writing their papers individually <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">or<\/span> preparing it as a group endeavour.\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Please inform me if you are writing your paper as an individual by March 18<\/span>.\u00a0 <strong>Should I become aware that a member of the group is NOT working as part of a cohesive unit, I will make the individual write the paper on his\/her own even though s\/he may have selected to do a group paper.\u00a0<\/strong> Working together means the whole process of merging the separate aspects of the essay into a whole if that is how you choose to operate.\u00a0 <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Do not expect one person to be responsible for completing the writing and editing for a group paper<\/span><\/em>.\u00a0 ANTH 112 students may help with certain tasks in the project but are not expected to write any specific portion of the ANTH 326 paper.<\/p>\n<p>Your paper is to be written according to the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagomanualofstyle.org\/tools_citationguide.html\" target=\"_blank\">Chicago style guide<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0 Not doing so will affect your overall mark.\u00a0 If you use outside sources, <strong>you must cite your references<\/strong>.\u00a0 To not do so will be considered <a title=\"Plagiarism\" href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/limi\/extras\/general-information\/#plagiarism\"><strong>plagiarism<\/strong><\/a> (which comes with an academic penalty).<\/p>\n<p>The paper, besides detailing your analysis, should reflect the knowledge gained from your readings.\u00a0 It should include a theoretical section, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">and\/or<\/span> background research; students should be aware of theory that has become internalized.\u00a0 Like biases, one should be fully cognizant of all potential influences that affect the outcome.<\/p>\n<p><em>Ethnography Essentials<\/em> illustrates how one puts together an ethnography and <em>Field Ethnography<\/em> (optional text) provide plenty of examples on how one might write an ethnography.\u00a0 Use these as guides.\u00a0 A <strong>group paper will be about 20-30 pages<\/strong> while an <strong>individual paper will be 10-15 pages<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">In general<\/span>:<\/strong>\u00a0 Papers should be typed, double-spaced, and 11- or 12-pt font size, with 2.5cm (1 in) margins.\u00a0 Grammar, spelling, and overall presentation count for a portion of your grade.\u00a0 As always, the quality of your comments and observations are important.\u00a0 Verbosity is not a virtue.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Omit needless words.\u00a0 Vigorous writing is concise.\u00a0 A sentence should contain no unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary sentences, for the same reason that a drawing should have no unnecessary lines and a machine no unnecessary parts.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small\">(William Strunk, Jr., professor and author [1869-1946])<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">DUE:<\/span>\u00a0 Tuesday, April 19, 1:00pm<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-size: large\">The tragedy in the lives of most of us is that we go through life walking down a high-walled land with people of our own kind, the same economic situation, the same national background and education and religious outlook.
