Lim, PhD \u00a0<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/limi\/files\/2012\/05\/Lim_chop2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-30 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/limi\/files\/2012\/05\/Lim_chop2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Chinese calligraphy: Lum Mo Jun\" width=\"54\" height=\"54\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/limi\/files\/2012\/05\/Lim_chop2-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/limi\/files\/2012\/05\/Lim_chop2.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 54px) 100vw, 54px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>is an ethnoarchaeologist by training (BA Hons, Simon Fraser University; AM &amp; PhD, Brown University) in VIU&#8217;s <a title=\"VIU Anthropology Homepage\" href=\"https:\/\/socialsciences.viu.ca\/anthropology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Department of Anthropology<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/socialsciences.viu.ca\/global-studies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Global Studies Program<\/a>. In July 2024, she retired from teaching; emeritus status was conferred during the 2025 June Convocation.\u00a0 From 2006-09 and 2012-15, she served as Chair of the Anthropology Department. Her research interests include: foraging societies, rock art, ethnicity, the Chinese diaspora in North America (archaeology &amp; ethnohistory), and the anthropology of food.\u00a0 She has worked with diverse communities in BC and abroad, and more specifically, for the past two decades those on Vancouver Island. In it&#8217;s inaugural year, 2018, Dr. Lim was awarded the <a href=\"https:\/\/research.viu.ca\/sites\/default\/files\/imogene_lim_excellence_2018_038_0.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">VIU President&#8217;s Award for Community Engagement<\/a> (Community-Engaged Scholarship, Research and Creative Activity Award). She is also the recipient of the 2019 Deans\u2019 Scholarship, Research and Creative Activity Award. In 2021, she received the 2020 <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/governments\/celebrating-british-columbia\/honours-and-awards\/medal-good-citizenship\/latest-recipients\/recipients#lim\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BC Medal of Good Citizenship<\/a>. For her community service, which has affected social change locally, regionally and provincially, she received a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gg.ca\/en\/honours\/canadian-honours\/directory-honours\/commemorative-medals\/king-charles-iii-coronation-medal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">King Charles III Coronation Medal<\/a>, one of twenty medals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nanaimobulletin.com\/local-news\/20-nanaimo-ladysmith-residents-honoured-with-coronation-medals-7784037\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">presented by Lisa-Marie Barron<\/a>, MP, Nanaimo-Ladysmith.\u00a0\u00a0From 2015-17, she was a co-researcher on a SSHRC project, <a href=\"http:\/\/vi-asiancanadians.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Asian Canadians on Vancouver Island<\/a>.\u00a0 Dr. Lim was re-appointed a member of the Editorial Board of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcstudies.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BC Studies<\/a> (from 2017).\u00a0 Her community contributions include appointments to the board of the <a href=\"http:\/\/thelaurier.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Laurier Institution<\/a> (2017-21), the <a href=\"https:\/\/cumberland.ca\/coal-creek-advisory-committee\/\">Coal Creek Historic Park Advisory Committee<\/a> (Cumberland, Vancouver Island, 2008-21), the Nanaimo Local Immigration Partnership Council (2018-19), BC Legacy Initiatives Advisory Council (2014-18) to &#8220;support and advise government on how to implement recommendations made in the Chinese Historical Wrongs Consultation Final Report&#8221; (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/governments\/multiculturalism-anti-racism\/chinese-legacy-bc\">Apology for Historical Wrongs Legacy<\/a>), and the Premier&#8217;s Chinese Canadian Community Advisory Committee (2018), as well as, being a founding member and former Board Director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cchsbc.ca\/\">Chinese Canadian Historical Society of BC<\/a>.\u00a0 In 2020, Dr. Lim was appointed a Board member of the Chinese Canadian Museum Society of BC, which will lead the development and operation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gov.bc.ca\/releases\/2020TAC0035-001302\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">first Chinese Canadian Museum<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1356\" style=\"width: 239px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/limi\/files\/2012\/11\/E2GM_ILim-x.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1356\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1356\" src=\"https:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/limi\/files\/2012\/11\/E2GM_ILim-x-229x300.jpg\" alt=\"I Lim 'cartoon' from E2GM\" width=\"229\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/limi\/files\/2012\/11\/E2GM_ILim-x-229x300.jpg 229w, https:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/limi\/files\/2012\/11\/E2GM_ILim-x.jpg 336w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 229px) 100vw, 229px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1356\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Courtesy of David HT Wong, from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.escapetogoldmountain.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Escape to<\/em> <em>Gold Mountain<\/em><\/a> (2012).<\/p><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"><em>Education is a progressive discovery of our own ignorance.<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n&#8212; Will Durant, historian (1885-1981)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\"><em>Last updated 2025-07-08<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Imogene L.
