{"id":1640,"date":"2013-09-04T13:07:45","date_gmt":"2013-09-04T20:07:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/limi\/?page_id=1640"},"modified":"2024-01-09T10:29:34","modified_gmt":"2024-01-09T18:29:34","slug":"anth-335-evaluation","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/limi\/courses\/current-courses\/anth-335\/anth-335-evaluation\/","title":{"rendered":"ANTH 335 Evaluation &amp; Assignments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Evaluation will be based on attendance and participation (25%), opinion piece (5%), short paper-films (15%), exam (25%), and final paper (30%).\u00a0 <strong>There is no final exam.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>**Not submitting an exam or assignment will result in an \u201cF\u201d;<br \/>\nyour final grade is based on completing ALL course work.**<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>PARTICIPATION &amp; ATTENDANCE (25%)<br \/>\n<\/strong>As noted, participation accounts for 25% of your grade; this is split between the different aspects of participation.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Attendance is required<\/strong>; after the first two weeks, a sign-in sheet will be circulated.\u00a0\u00a0 If you sign-in and depart, this will be noted.\u00a0 There will be specific and general in-class discussion.\u00a0 If you are absent, you cannot participate.\u00a0 (See VIU General Regulations\u2013<a href=\"https:\/\/www.viu.ca\/registration\/general-regulations#illness\">Attendance<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Active participation is contributing to all in-class activities, 10%; discussion is the primary one.\u00a0 I am interested in the\u00a0<strong>quality of comments and\/or questions raised during discussion<\/strong>.\u00a0 Be an informed participant, i.e., read the assigned materials.<\/p>\n<p>Please submit a\u00a0<strong>self-evaluation of your participation,<\/strong> 5%\u00a0(no more than 250 words, through VIULearn): 1) by\u00a0<strong>February 16<\/strong>; and 2) by\u00a0<strong>April 12<\/strong>.\u00a0 What are you learning?\u00a0 What is working for you?\u00a0 What challenges may be impacting your learning.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Be reflective and honest<\/strong>\u00a0about your participation.<\/p>\n<p>For those who are less confident about speaking in class, you can still participate through\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/learn.viu.ca\/d2l\/loginh\/\">VIULearn<\/a>, 10%.\u00a0 Each student is expected to\u00a0<strong>contribute<\/strong>\u00a0to the discussion topics (grouped as weekly)\u00a0<strong><em>throughout the semester<\/em><\/strong>, either by posting a relevant article, or commenting on one submitted by a classmate.\u00a0 The latter should be\u00a0<strong>substantive<\/strong>,\u00a0i.e., an informed opinion, not one that states agreement.\u00a0 Whether you do all or some remains your choice; your participation mark will reflect this.<\/p>\n<p>To receive full credit for participation <strong>(quality counts!)<\/strong>, you must 1) attend class, 2) participate fully in class activities (discussion, etc.), 3) provide two self-evaluations of participation, and 4) post to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/learn.viu.ca\/d2l\/loginh\/\">VIULearn<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span> Last day to post or submit an opinion piece to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/learn.viu.ca\/d2l\/loginh\/\">VIULearn<\/a>, if you want it to be considered as part of your overall mark, is\u00a0<strong>Friday, April 19, 11:30pm<\/strong><strong>!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>OPINION PIECE (5%)<\/strong><br \/>\nYou are encouraged to learn outside the classroom by taking advantage of on- and off-campus events. During the semester, I will post possibilities as I become aware of them.\u00a0<em>If there is an event that you wish to attend that I have not listed, please check with me. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Attend an event and submit an opinion piece<\/strong> (no more than 250-300 words) <strong>through <a title=\"Learn VIU\" href=\"https:\/\/learn.viu.ca\/d2l\/loginh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">VIULearn<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>opin-ion<\/strong> <em>\\ \u0259-\u2019pin-y\u0259 n \\<\/em> n. 1 a: a view, judgment, or appraisal formed in the mind about a particular matter.<br \/>\n(Merriam-Webster\u2019s Collegiate\u00ae Dictionary 11th Edition)<\/p>\n<p>As the above definition implies, I am interested in your response to the event. Your commentary is <strong>NOT to be a summary<\/strong>. Be reflective, <strong>support your opinion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong><\/span> This is the only assignment that can be considered \u2018optional\u2019; there is no penalty if you do not complete this other than <strong>missing 5% of your mark<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Last day to post:<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #993300\"><strong>Tuesday, April 19, 11:30pm<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SHORT PAPER, FILMS<\/strong> (15%)<strong>:<br \/>\n<\/strong>There are numerous excellent NFB documentaries about Canadians, some are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">open public access<\/a> while others are available through <a href=\"https:\/\/www-nfb-ca.ezproxy.viu.ca\/explore-all-films\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NFB Campus<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You are to compare\/contrast Nakagawa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/film\/between_living_in_the_hyphen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Between: Living in the Hyphen<\/em><\/a> (2005, 44min) with <u>one<\/u> of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Osborne\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/film\/sleeping_tigers_the_asahi_baseball_story\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Sleeping Tigers: The Asahi Baseball Story<\/em><\/a> (2003, 51min).<\/li>\n<li>Pappa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/film\/opre_roma_gypsies_in_canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Opre Roma: Gypsies in Canada<\/em><\/a> (1999, 52min).<\/li>\n<li>Welsh\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www-nfb-ca.ezproxy.viu.ca\/film\/story_of_the_coast_salish_knitters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Story of the Coast Salish Knitters<\/em><\/a> (2000, 52min).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each is about identity.\u00a0 How has history, family, and\/or place affected their sense of self and community?<\/p>\n<p>Your paper should be no more than 4-pages (1200 words), excluding endnotes and\/or bibliography.\u00a0 For further information on how to present and write a paper, go to <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/limi\/extras\/on-writing\/\">On Writing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Your paper will be evaluated according to the following: 1) understanding the issue(s) of identity as presented in each film; 2) balanced discussion (compare\/contrast) of films; and 3) spelling, grammar, and presentation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #800000\"><strong>DUE: <\/strong><\/span><strong>Thursday, March 14, 11:30pm<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>FINAL PAPER (30%)<\/strong><br \/>\nI am open to non-standard formats other than a formal paper, such as, an audio or video podcast, or another type of creative piece. Should you elect to work on something in a non-standard format, <strong>please come see me BEFORE Study Week!\u00a0 Your project <em>must be<\/em> approved for you to proceed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The focus of your paper will be (a) theme(s) arising from your selection of either <em>Chop Suey Nation<\/em>, or <em>Five Little Indians<\/em>. There will be a sign-up on <a title=\"Learn VIU\" href=\"https:\/\/learn.viu.ca\/d2l\/loginh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">VIULearn<\/a>; <strong>each book is to be represented by half the class<\/strong>. Besides your paper\/project, you will be expected to contribute to the discussion during the penultimate week of classes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Your paper\/project should illustrate your ability to think and write critically and intelligently.<strong> If you write or present a solely descriptive work, do not expect a high mark.<\/strong> I am interested in hearing your opinion; therefore, you need to take a position regarding a topic or issue, and, then, support it. Incorporate information from your class readings, the films, and lectures\/discussion, where appropriate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Referencing is to follow the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagomanualofstyle.org\/tools_citationguide\/citation-guide-2.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Chicago Manual of Style<\/strong><\/a><strong> (Author-Date)<\/strong>. <strong>All citations are to be fully referenced<\/strong>. (Paraphrasing also requires citation of source.) To not do so will be considered <a title=\"Plagiarism\" href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/limi\/extras\/general-information\/#plagiarism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">plagiarism<\/a> (which comes with an academic penalty). <strong>Wikipedia is NOT an appropriate reference source!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Papers should be 6-8 pages in length, maximum of 2400 words, excluding endnotes and\/or bibliography. Your paper is to be submitted typed, <strong>double-spaced<\/strong>, 11-12pt font size. Margins should be 2.5cm (1 in). For further information on how to present and write a paper, go to <a title=\"On Writing\" href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/limi\/extras\/on-writing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">On Writing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Students electing to undertake a creative work, e.g., video or podcast, will post it directly to VIULearn, with its <strong>presentation<\/strong> on the last day of class, <strong>April 11<\/strong>.\u00a0 <strong>Creative pieces (or any non-standard format) must be accompanied by a bibliography.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Like a paper, the non-standard format needs to illustrate your ability to think critically and express a point of view.\u00a0 The format also implies a degree of creativity.\u00a0 Please keep this in mind.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Your \u201cpaper\u201d will be evaluated according to the following: 1) your understanding of the chosen topic or issue; 2) your research; 3) critical thinking; and 4) spelling, grammar, and presentation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000\">DUE:<\/span> Thursday, April 18, 11:30pm<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Assignments are <em><strong>due through VIULearn<\/strong><\/em> (follow instructions).
