Be an informed participant; read the assigned materials!&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Your regular engagement with <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.viu.ca\/d2l\/loginh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">VIULearn<\/a> establishes your presence.<\/strong>&nbsp; This means viewing content and\/or responding to discussions.&nbsp; Each student is expected to contribute to the general forums (a <em>minimum<\/em> of EIGHT posts in total).&nbsp; Those grouped as REQUIRED are just that; the expectation is that you will respond to these.&nbsp; Whether you do all or some remains your choice; your participation mark will reflect this.<\/p>\n<p>Postings can be a <strong>relevant article<\/strong> or a <strong>comment<\/strong> on one that has been submitted; the latter should be a substantive comment, i.e., an informed opinion, not one that states agreement. Commentary should also be included with the former; why is it relevant to the course? Your commentary is <strong>NOT to be a summary<\/strong>. Be reflective,<strong> support your opinion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong><\/span> This is the only assignment that can be considered \u2018optional\u2019; there is no penalty if you do not complete this other than missing 5% of your mark.&nbsp; This is to be completed by the end of the semester.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a name=\"exam\"><\/a>EXAM (20%)<\/strong><br \/>\nThe exam is based on readings, plus <em>The Hundred-Foot Journey <\/em>and <em>My Life in France<\/em>.&nbsp; Students will respond to two questions: one on <em>The Hundred-Foot Journey <\/em>(choice of two) and one of two others, with one based on <em>My Life in France<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong>There will be NO final exam.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Answers should be typed, double-spaced, 11-12-pt font.&nbsp; Please save as&nbsp;<strong>docx&nbsp;or&nbsp;pdf-format<\/strong>; submit through&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/learn.viu.ca\/d2l\/loginh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">VIULearn<\/a>.&nbsp; No bibliography is needed, <em>unless other sources are used<\/em>.&nbsp; You will be using your texts so <strong>in-text citation<\/strong>, such as, (Child 2006, 54) or (Morais 2010, 186).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Word count maximum for each exam question:&nbsp; 750<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000\">DUE:<\/span> November 26<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a name=\"memory\"><\/a>FOOD MEMORY STORY (10%)<\/strong><br \/>\nEveryone has a food memory story\u2014good or bad, happy or sad, e.g., the cooking disaster, a birthday or other celebratory event. In no more than two pages (ca. 250-600 words), tell your story. Think of this as a <strong>creative writing piece<\/strong>; if you want to compose a poem or word picture, go ahead.<\/p>\n<p>You will be assessed on the content and your skill at conveying the story.&nbsp; Submit via <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.viu.ca\/d2l\/loginl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">VIULearn<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000\">DUE:<\/span> September 24, with zoom discussion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a name=\"diary\"><\/a><a name=\"opinion\"><\/a>FOOD &#8220;DIARY&#8221; (5%)<\/strong><br \/>\nFrom <strong>September 28-October 4<\/strong>, you are to create a daily journal of thoughts and activities that are food-related. Each day\u2019s entry will be a chronology of the day\u2019s events but through the &#8220;filter&#8221; of food (make sure you <strong>date each day\u2019s entry<\/strong>!). This is to be <strong>comprehensive<\/strong>&#8211;who, what, when, where, how.&nbsp; Recipes are not expected, nor are they to be included.<\/p>\n<p>For those who want to document their food \u2018encounters\u2019 through other media: compile photos (lo-res) with a max. 12-word description for each image; OR compile 20-sec video clips for each food episode.<\/p>\n<p>The analysis will occur in the form of class discussion (zoom break out rooms) and online forum, especially for those unable to meet in zoom.&nbsp; Your participation in discussion matters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000\">DUE:<\/span> October 8, with zoom discussion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a name=\"cookbook\"><\/a>COOKBOOK ANALYSIS (15%)<\/strong><br \/>\nSelect <strong>one type of cuisine<\/strong>; your choice may be restricted to the cookbooks available (check the library, VIU or VIRL, as well as your own or family\u2019s collection). You will be <strong>examining TWO cookbooks<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>one contemporary, AND one that pre-dates 1970**, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>OR<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li>one that is produced in the country of the cuisine\u2019s origin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong><\/span> If you do not have a pre-1970s cookbook, you can go online to <a href=\"http:\/\/digital.lib.msu.edu\/projects\/cookbooks\/index.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Feeding America: The Historic American Cookbook Project<\/em><\/a> or <a title=\"Canadian Cookbooks website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.collectionscanada.gc.ca\/cuisine\/027006-100.01-e.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Bon App\u00e9tit! A Celebration of Canadian Cookbooks<\/em><\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/online.canadiana.ca\/search\/?q0.0=cookbooks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Canadiana online<\/em> (cookbooks)<\/a>. Each site has fully searchable digitized cookbooks.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000\"><strong>**NOTE:<\/strong> <\/span>There should be at least a 25-year time span between your \u2018contemporary\u2019 and \u2018older\u2019 cookbook.&nbsp; This time span represents the average for a generation.<\/p>\n<p>Some questions to consider: How does each cookbook present the cuisine? What are the differences, or similarities between the two? What do we learn about the culture through its food in each of these particular cookbooks? What accommodations, if any, are made to the cookbook\u2019s audience? Who is the audience?<\/p>\n<p>A cookbook is a historic document\u2014an artefact of its time and place of publication. Your analysis should reflect this perspective.<\/p>\n<p><em>Eat my Words: Reading Women&#8217;s Lives through the Cookbooks They Wrote<\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small\">(TX 644 T47 2002)<\/span> might help you with insights, as well as, <a href=\"https:\/\/ebookcentral.proquest.com\/lib\/viu\/reader.action?docID=3284228&amp;ppg=188\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Epp<\/a> in Iacovetta et al (2012:173-188) and other <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/limi\/courses\/current-courses\/anth-324\/anth324-resources\/\">e-resources<\/a> that I have identified.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a name=\"note\"><\/a>NOTE:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>All written work is to be submitted <strong>typed, double-spaced, 11-12pt font size through <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.viu.ca\/d2l\/loginh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">VIULearn<\/a><\/strong> as a <strong>Word-docx or as a pdf<\/strong>.&nbsp; Margins should be 2.5cm (1 in). A <strong>5-7 page paper<\/strong> is approximately 1250-2100 words, excluding endnotes and\/or bibliography (all citations are to be fully referenced). No cover page is needed; however <em>please ensure that your name and student number are included<\/em>. Please review.<\/li>\n<li>Whenever possible, incorporate your readings. Given Child\u2019s (2006) commentary on the creation of <em>Mastering the Art of French Cooking<\/em>, I expect many will reference some aspect of her book, which is one of your texts.<\/li>\n<li>Citations should follow the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagomanualofstyle.org\/tools_citationguide\/citation-guide-2.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chicago Manual of Style (Author-Date)<\/a>. Paraphrasing also requires you to cite your source. Plagiarism will not be tolerated. <strong>Students caught plagiarizing will automatically receive an \u201cF\u201d as their final grade.<\/strong> Refer online to \u201c<a title=\"General Info - plagiarism\" href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/limi\/extras\/general-information\/#plagiarism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">General Information<\/a>\u201d on these two topics. <strong>Wikipedia is NOT an appropriate reference source!&nbsp; <\/strong>It is a starting point for your research; check the sources used in the creation of the item.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000\">DUE:<\/span> October 22, with zoom discussion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a name=\"research\"><\/a>RESEARCH PRESENTATION (25%)<\/strong><br \/>\nYour topic should be related to <strong>food culture in Canada<\/strong> (North America is okay). In any case, your<strong> topic MUST be approved by October 9<\/strong>. An <strong>abstract <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">and<\/span> preliminary bibliography<\/strong> are due <strong>November 6.&nbsp; <\/strong>Your presentation can be either using PPT, or video.&nbsp; Examples of possible topics: television cooking shows; cooking videos, and advertising.&nbsp; Not meeting these deadlines will affect your mark.<\/p>\n<p>Given that students are to maintain social distancing, <strong>please undertake library research, or use public domain resources, e.g., YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, etc.&nbsp; <span style=\"color: #800000\">No human subject research is permitted.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>For presentations<\/strong><\/span>, a <strong>final bibliography<\/strong> is to be submitted <strong>with<\/strong> <strong>your presentation<\/strong> (your mark will be affected without it) through VIULearn. Generally, any form of media can be used in your presentation; it will be approximately 10 minutes, followed by one or two questions. You need to use your time wisely to make your argument or point(s).<\/p>\n<p>For those unable to meet in zoom, expect your classmates to view your presentation online.&nbsp; Any questions posed, should be answered by you.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Expectations for presentations:<\/strong><\/span> Although your presentation is to include visual aids, content is still the area in which you should devote your greatest attention. A presentation with lots of &#8220;flash&#8221; illustrates that you know how to use technology; if there is no substance behind the flash, your mark will reflect this. View my <a title=\"Tips on Presentations\" href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/limi\/extras\/on-presentations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Guidelines and Tips for Presenters&#8221;<\/a> online.<\/p>\n<p>For those who want to try something a bit different, consider the <a href=\"https:\/\/wabisabilearning.com\/blogs\/technology-integration\/how-to-make-great-presentations-with-pecha-kucha\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pecha Kucha format<\/a>: 20 slides, 20 seconds per slide, for a 6:40-minute presentation.<\/p>\n<p>You will be graded on<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">1)<strong> content<\/strong>,<br \/>\nYour information should be relevant, informative, interesting, credible, and effective. Does it contribute to our understanding of the question\/issue posed?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">2) <strong>presentation style<\/strong>, and<br \/>\nYour presentation should be organized (well coordinated); and visual aids should be appropriate and enhance the presentation.
