{"id":275,"date":"2012-05-29T22:12:20","date_gmt":"2012-05-30T05:12:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/limi\/?page_id=275"},"modified":"2013-04-12T23:42:52","modified_gmt":"2013-04-13T06:42:52","slug":"preparation-ethics","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/limi\/extras\/preparation-ethics\/","title":{"rendered":"Preparation of Ethics Statement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Students conducting research involving human subjects must undergo a departmental ethics review (DRP), which <strong><em>includes<\/em><\/strong> the completion of the online Tri-Council Policy Statement Tutorial.\u00a0 Projects deemed low risk (see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.viu.ca\/REB\/documents\/minimalriskchecklist.pdf\" target=\"_new\">Minimal Risks Checklist<\/a>) will be reviewed by the <strong>faculty supervisor <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">and<\/span> one other member of the department<\/strong>.\u00a0 All other projects will be subject to a full review by the VIU\u2019s <strong>Research Ethics Board (VIU REB)<\/strong>.\u00a0 For further information on this submission process, which will involve additional forms, go to the <strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.viu.ca\/reb\/\" target=\"_blank\">VIU REB website<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"TCPS CORE Tutorial\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pre.ethics.gc.ca\/eng\/education\/tutorial-didacticiel\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tri-Council Policy Statement Tutorial<\/a>:\u00a0 <\/strong> All students conducting research involving human subjects are <strong>required<\/strong> to complete the TCPS 2 Tutorial (CORE) regarding ethical principles associated with such research. It is free of charge and available <a title=\"TCPS CORE Tutorial\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pre.ethics.gc.ca\/eng\/education\/tutorial-didacticiel\/\" target=\"_blank\">online<\/a>; allow for at least two hours to complete it.<\/p>\n<p>Please remember that the turn around time between submission and approval may be a day, or much longer if revisions are required, whether a departmental or VIU REB review.\u00a0 Please plan ahead!<\/p>\n<p>For students considering human subject research while on a Study Abroad or international internship or field school, note that in general this will require a full REB review.\u00a0 This is because research takes place in <strong>a different cultural context<\/strong>; therefore, it is no longer minimal risk!<\/p>\n<p>If you are considering research in School Disctrict #68; all research is to be approved by the Superintendent&#8217;s Office.
