If you are absent, you cannot participate. (See VIU General Regulations \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.viu.ca\/registration\/general-regulations#attendance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Attendance<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Active participation is contributing to all class activities; discussion is the primary one. \u00a0Credit will not be given to verbose individuals who enjoy the sound of their voices. \u00a0I am interested in the quality of comments and\/or questions raised during discussion. \u00a0Be an informed participant, i.e., read assigned articles!<\/p>\n<p>For those who are less confident about speaking in class, you can still participate through\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/d2l.viu.ca\/d2l\/loginh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VIULearn<\/a>. \u00a0<strong>Each student<\/strong>\u00a0is expected to contribute to the various discussion topics\u00a0<strong><em>throughout the semester <\/em><\/strong><strong>(minimum of four posts)<\/strong>, either by posting a relevant article, or commenting on one submitted by a classmate. \u00a0The latter should be\u00a0<strong>substantive,<\/strong>\u00a0i.e., an informed opinion, not one that states agreement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Class Project:<\/strong>\u00a0Street\/Public Art in Nanaimo.\u00a0 Besides the various items already identified through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nanaimo.ca\/public-art-inventory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">City of Nanaimo\u2019s Public Art Inventory<\/a>, where else is there public or street art?\u00a0 Include a short explanation for its inclusion.\u00a0 The database will be located in VIULearn.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0 Submissions to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/learn.viu.ca\/d2l\/loginh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>VIULearn<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0will be accepted up to\u00a0<strong>Friday, December 14, 11:30pm<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>To receive full credit for participation\u00a0<strong>(quality counts!)<\/strong>, you must 1) attend class,<br \/>\n2) participate fully in class activities (discussion, etc.), 3) contribute to the class project on public\/street art, and 4) post to VIULearn.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a name=\"Opinion\"><\/a>OPINION PIECE (5%)<\/strong><br \/>\nYou are encouraged to learn outside the classroom by taking advantage of on- and off-campus events, for example, viewing a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/worldbridger.ca\/\">Worldbridger<\/a>\u00a0film (Nanaimo Campus, Thursday evenings). \u00a0During the semester, I will post other possibilities as I become aware of them. \u00a0Check with me if there is an event that you wish to attend not already identified.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Attend an event and submit an opinion piece<\/strong>\u00a0(no more than 250-300 words)\u00a0<strong>through\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/learn.viu.ca\/d2l\/loginh\/\"><strong>VIULearn<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;padding-left: 30px\"><strong>opin-ion<\/strong>\u00a0<em>\\ \u0259-\u2019pin-y\u0259 n \\<\/em>\u00a0n. 1 a: a view, judgment, or appraisal formed in the mind about a particular matter.<br \/>\n(Merriam-Webster\u2019s Collegiate\u00ae Dictionary 11th Edition)<\/p>\n<p>As the above definition implies, I am interested in your response to the event. Your commentary is\u00a0<strong>NOT to be a summary<\/strong>. \u00a0Be reflective,\u00a0<strong>support your opinion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>This is the only assignment that can be considered \u2018optional\u2019; there is no penalty if you do not complete this other than missing 5% of your mark.<\/p>\n<p><strong>IN CLASS FILM RESPONSE (15%)<br \/>\n<\/strong>After viewing <i>XXXX<\/i>, you will be presented a general question to respond in class.\u00a0 Your response should <strong>incorporate what you have learned<\/strong> over the semester, as well as being an <strong>opinion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Your response is to be written as an essay and be grammatically correct.\u00a0 Spelling will not count.\u00a0 You will be evaluated on critical thinking and understanding of the course content.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>DUE:\u00a0 October 25<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>IN-CLASS, CREATING A STATEMENT (25%)<br \/>\n<\/strong>As we have learned in listening to artists\u2019 statements, their endeavours in expressing themselves visually have meaning and motive.\u00a0 For this assignment, there will a maximum of six groups of 4-6 individuals.\u00a0 Topics will be generated through class discussion.<\/p>\n<p><u>Part 1<\/u>: Based on the topic, students will research the issue at hand and bring their resources to the group to discuss.\u00a0 Each student will provide a minimum of two items, submitting these through VIULearn.\u00a0 They should be properly cited, with a rationale for their relevance to the topic. \u00a0Each individual\u2019s contribution will be submitted and evaluated individually.\u00a0 The group will merge these into one document to share with the whole class.\u00a0 (10% of the 25%)<\/p>\n<p>In class, there will be a discussion on how the topic\/issue can be visually expressed.<\/p>\n<p><u>Part 2<\/u>: Creating a statement visually.\u00a0 Two class periods will be allocated to work out some of the details.\u00a0 The created piece is to be submitted as a group.\u00a0 (10% of the 25%)<\/p>\n<p><u>Part 3<\/u>: Presenting the item to the class as a group; individually, submit through VIULearn, your reflection on the process.\u00a0 (5% of the 25%)<\/p>\n<p>The class will vote to determine, if a 2-dimensional statement might be professional printed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY (10%)<\/strong><br \/>\nIn preparation for the <strong>final project<\/strong>, students are to <strong>pair themselves<\/strong> to begin research on a topic with the same focus of this course. \u00a0You may want to consider a topic that has not been adequately covered in the course, such as, dating methods, conservation, ethics, or\u00a0eco-tourism.\u00a0 You should have a minimum of <strong>7-10 references<\/strong>.\u00a0 Depending on the topic, there should be a mix of articles and books or book chapters.\u00a0 Follow citation references according to the <strong>Chicago Manual of Style (Author-Date)<\/strong>. If you are having trouble finding sources, please see me.\u00a0 Refer to my comments on &#8220;<strong>Using Internet Resources,\u201d<\/strong> that is, be critical of the content!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Annotated bibliographies<\/strong> provide full citation sources, PLUS some form of brief summary or annotation of assessment.\u00a0\u00a0 Remember to alphabetize these.\u00a0 For further information regarding annotated bibliographies, go to: <a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.viu.ca\/annotated\">VIU LibGuide Annotated Bibliographies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Topics MUST be approved<\/strong> <strong>(Week 6, Nov 12)<\/strong> for your final project and are to be <strong>problem-based<\/strong>.\u00a0 A solely descriptive poster or presentation will NOT be acceptable.\u00a0 At the time of submitting your annotated bibliography, include the <strong>title <u>and<\/u> a statement on the topic<\/strong> (short paragraph).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>DUE:\u00a0 Nov 2<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>POSTER OR VISUAL PRESENTATION (25%)<br \/>\nPoster Presentation:\u00a0 <\/strong>Academic conferences regularly accept poster presentations as a means of circulating information quickly and conveniently. It allows for more presenters than the usual forum of three to six speakers per session. This assignment will force you <strong>to be concise<\/strong> and <strong>to the point<\/strong> in stating: your problem, research, analysis and\/or interpretation, and conclusion.<\/p>\n<p>Each group of two students will indicate the rationale for their poster (no more than two minutes) and then respond to one or two questions (<strong>total presentation, maximum of ten minutes<\/strong>).\u00a0 While the posters are on display, poster presenters should be ready to respond to any questions from their peers.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Remember each student will be critiquing ONE other student&#8217;s poster, as part of his\/her participation mark.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Remember that <strong>an effective poster<\/strong> is <strong>visually interesting<\/strong> as well as <strong>informative<\/strong>. All text (even though highly informative) is not likely to invite an audience. Your task is to attract someone to a subject that interests you.<\/p>\n<p>As with any research project, you need to <strong>cite sources<\/strong> (for images, as well as, the usual written information).\u00a0 A <strong>final bibliography<\/strong> is to be attached submitted to <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.viu.ca\/d2l\/loginh\/\">VIULearn<\/a> (your mark will be affected without it).<\/p>\n<p>Use a standard fold-out presentation board (48&#8243;x36&#8243;) like those available at Staples or Michaels, or have your presentation (landscape-orientation) printed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pecha Kucha Presentation:<\/strong>\u00a0 Your presentation is based on the annotated bibliography.\u00a0 A <strong>final bibliography<\/strong> is to be submitted the <strong>day of your presentation<\/strong> (your mark will be affected without it).\u00a0 A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pechakucha.org\/\">Pecha Kucha<\/a> presentation is simply 20 slides with 20 seconds of commentary, so no more than 6:40 min.\u00a0 The slides are automatically set to run at a 20-second interval.\u00a0 Review article on <a href=\"https:\/\/globaldigitalcitizen.org\/how-to-make-great-presentations-with-pecha-kucha\">making great Pecha Kucha presentations<\/a>.\u00a0 Submit to <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.viu.ca\/d2l\/loginh\/\">VIULearn<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Review the <a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.viu.ca\/presentations\">VIU LibGuide Presentation Design and Delivery<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You will be graded on<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>content<\/strong>,<br \/>\nYour information should be relevant, informative, interesting, credible, and effective.\u00a0 Does it contribute to our understanding of the question\/issue posed?<\/li>\n<li><strong>presentation style<\/strong>,\u00a0and<br \/>\nYour presentation should be organized (well coordinated); speakers should have &#8220;presence&#8221; (eye contact, audible voice, good overall demeanor); and visual aids should be appropriate and enhance the presentation.\u00a0 If you leave your audience &#8220;wowed&#8221; <u>and<\/u> informed, then consider your presentation style effective.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong><u>NOTE<\/u><\/strong><strong>:<\/strong> Those doing a Pecha Kucha presentation should have it loaded onto the classroom computer ready to go!\u00a0 Remember, the slides are on an automated 20-second interval.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>discussion<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThis portion of your grade is based on the manner in which you handle questions and encourage audience feedback.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>DUE:\u00a0 Dec 4 &amp; 6<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>NOTE:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>No lates, please!\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0 Assignments are due in class or, as noted, through\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/learn.viu.ca\/d2l\/loginh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VIULearn<\/a>.\u00a0 Only in exceptional circumstances (e.g., verifiable ill-health) and only when the instructor is notified will other arrangements be made.
