read the assigned materials!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Your regular engagement with <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/learn.viu.ca\/d2l\/loginh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>VIULearn<\/strong><\/a> <strong>establishes your presence.<\/strong> &nbsp;This means viewing content and\/or responding to discussions. &nbsp;Each student is expected to contribute to the general forums. &nbsp;Those grouped as REQUIRED are just that; the expectation is that you will respond to these. &nbsp;<em>Whether you do all or some remains your choice; your participation mark will reflect this<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Postings can be a <strong>relevant article <\/strong>or a <strong>comment <\/strong>on one that has been submitted; This is the only assignment that can be considered \u2018optional\u2019; there is no penalty if you do not complete this other than missing 5% of your mark. &nbsp;This is to be <strong>submitted by the end of the semester, April 23, 11:30pm<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>EXAM (20%)<\/strong><br \/>The exam is based on course readings, plus <em>Things That Art<\/em>. &nbsp;Students will respond to two questions.&nbsp; <strong>There will be NO final exam.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Answers should be typed, <strong>double-spaced<\/strong>, 11-12-pt font. &nbsp;Please save as <strong>docx or pdf-format<\/strong>; submit through <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.viu.ca\/d2l\/loginh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">VIULearn<\/a>. &nbsp;No bibliography is needed <em>unless other sources are used<\/em>. &nbsp;You will be using your texts so <strong>in-text citation<\/strong>, such as, (Jain 2019, 99) or (Light 2020, 83).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Word count maximum for each exam question: &nbsp;750<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-vivid-red-color has-text-color\"><strong>DUE:&nbsp; Apr 1, 11:30pm<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>NAME STORY (15%)<br \/><\/strong>We all have names.&nbsp; Some of us have many names, possibly even hyphenated ones.&nbsp; Those names may reflect our ethno-cultural backgrounds; they may be \u2018gifted\u2019 to us; they may have changed over time\u2014intentionally or unintentionally.&nbsp; The change may be in the spelling, for example, from another language to English.&nbsp; Week 3 and 4 have several readings on this topic, including an essay on my name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In no more than two pages (<strong>ca. 250-600 words<\/strong>), tell the story of your name, <strong>minimally your surname<\/strong>. &nbsp;You will likely have to do a bit of <strong>research on your name<\/strong>.&nbsp; Think of this as a <strong>creative writing piece<\/strong>; if you want to compose a poem or a song, go ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will be assessed on the content, including your research, and your skill at conveying the story (grammar and spelling count!). &nbsp;Submit <strong>docx or pdf-format<\/strong> via <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.viu.ca\/d2l\/loginl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">VIULearn<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-vivid-red-color has-text-color\"><strong>DUE:&nbsp; Feb 11, 11:30pm<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>NEWSPAPER ANALYSIS (20%)<br \/><\/strong>This is no surprise to anyone reading or listening to the news.&nbsp; There is a lot of \u2018stuff\u2019 out there, including the often-heard statement of \u2018fake news.\u2019&nbsp; You are to select <strong>an event covered by two English-language media outlets<\/strong> to <strong>compare and contrast their reportage<\/strong>.&nbsp; To see whether there is bias, choose media that are known to be different, that is, one that is left-of-centre and the other as neutral\/balanced or right-of-centre.&nbsp; There are even media viewed as not fact-checking or known for using questionable sources.&nbsp; To assist with your selection, review the resources listed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Resources:<\/strong><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/mediabiasfactcheck.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Media Bias \/ Fact Check<\/a> (\u201cdedicated to educating the public on media bias and deceptive news practices,\u201d since 2015)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adfontesmedia.com\/interactive-media-bias-chart-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Media Bias Chart<\/a> (created by Vanessa Otero, founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adfontesmedia.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ad fontes media<\/a>, since 2018)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.snopes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Snopes<\/a> (fact-checking source, since 1994)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some attributes, but not limited to, to consider are language use (neutral, provocative, gender); quoting individuals, are they credible; is the report factual or is an opinion being expressed, etc.&nbsp; Your analysis should be <strong>no more than 1200 words (or 4-pages)<\/strong>, excluding bibliography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Properly reference your media sources, <strong>including URLs<\/strong> (I spot check these!).&nbsp; Citations should be according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www-chicagomanualofstyle-org.ezproxy.viu.ca\/tools_citationguide\/citation-guide-2.html\"><strong>Chicago Manual of Style, <\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www-chicagomanualofstyle-org.ezproxy.viu.ca\/tools_citationguide\/citation-guide-2.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Author-Date<\/strong>.<\/a>&nbsp; I have highlighted Author-Date as CMOS has two styles and this is the one typically used in social sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will be assessed on identifying two media outlets (include their position on the spectrum of media bias, and URL) and the specific event, analysis of the reportage, and overall presentation (including spelling and grammar).&nbsp; Submit <strong>docx or pdf-format<\/strong> via&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/learn.viu.ca\/d2l\/loginl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">VIULearn<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-vivid-red-color has-text-color\"><strong>DUE:&nbsp; Mar 11, 11:30pm<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>RESTAURANT PROJECT (20%)<br \/><\/strong>Words have history; words can be \u2018loaded,\u2019 literally and figuratively.&nbsp; In this final assignment, you are the owner of a new restaurant.&nbsp; As the owner, you need to <strong>create a name<\/strong> for \u2018your\u2019 restaurant and provide <strong>a menu: \u2018specials of the day.\u2019<\/strong>&nbsp; As well, provide a <strong>tagline<\/strong> (this is your marketing statement).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What does this have to do with language and culture?&nbsp; Everything.&nbsp; Does the name reflect the type of cuisine being offered, for example, fast food, family style, ethnic, haute cuisine, etc.?&nbsp; Location can also be a factor, specifically, history.&nbsp; In the restaurant business, there is a language of food, for example, \u2018surf and turf\u2019 or \u2018blue plate.\u2019&nbsp; For your <strong>menu specials<\/strong>, suggest <strong>minimally three<\/strong> with unique names\u2014again, reflective of your restaurant\u2019s type.&nbsp; The expectation is for you to <strong>justify your decision-making<\/strong>.&nbsp; How did you come to your choices?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We will have explored examples of the choices made by some restaurateurs that have gone awry.&nbsp; Success, besides having excellent front and back staff, includes marketing, so words matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is to be prepared as a <strong>presentation: poster, video, or PowerPoint<\/strong>.&nbsp; As this assignment needs to stand alone, you will have to include audio or sufficient text.&nbsp; You will be sharing your projects online with your peers for comments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Videos and PowerPoints should be no more than 8-minutes in length.&nbsp; it is the whole package!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-vivid-red-color has-text-color\"><strong>DUE:<\/strong> Two presentation dates for those who like to get their work done early<br \/><strong>Apr 8 &amp; This illustrates that you can apply and reflect upon what you have learned.&nbsp; Doing this well can raise your writing to the next level.<\/li><li>Citations should follow the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagomanualofstyle.org\/tools_citationguide\/citation-guide-2.html\" target=\"_blank\">Chicago Manual of Style, Author-Date<\/a>. &nbsp;Paraphrasing also requires you to cite your source. &nbsp;Plagiarism will not be tolerated. &nbsp;Students caught plagiarizing will automatically receive an \u201cF\u201d as their final grade. &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/learningmatters.viu.ca\/ready-set-go\/academic-integrity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Academic integrity matters<\/a>;
