Assignments"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Participation &amp; Attendance (25%):<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As noted, participation accounts for 25% of your grade; this is split between the different aspects of participation.&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong>Attendance is required<\/strong>; after the first two weeks, a sign-in sheet will be circulated.&nbsp;&nbsp; If you sign-in and depart, this will be noted.&nbsp; There will be some in-class activities.&nbsp; If you are absent, you cannot participate.&nbsp; (See VIU General Regulations\u2013<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.viu.ca\/registration\/general-regulations#illness\" target=\"_blank\">Attendance<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Active participation is contributing to all class activities, 10%; discussion is the primary one.&nbsp; I am interested in the&nbsp;<strong>quality of comments and\/or questions raised during discussion<\/strong>.&nbsp; Be an informed participant, i.e., read the assigned materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please submit a&nbsp;<strong>self-evaluation of your participation,<\/strong> 5%&nbsp;(no more than 250 words, through VIULearn): 1) by&nbsp;<strong>October 13<\/strong>; and 2) by&nbsp;<strong>December 8<\/strong>.&nbsp; What are you learning?&nbsp; What is working for you?&nbsp; What challenges may be impacting your learning.&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong>Be reflective and honest<\/strong>&nbsp;about your participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For those who are less confident about speaking in class, you can still participate through&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/learn.viu.ca\/d2l\/loginh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">VIULearn<\/a>, 10%.&nbsp; Each student is expected to&nbsp;<strong>contribute<\/strong>&nbsp;to the discussion topics (grouped as weekly)&nbsp;<strong><em>throughout the semester<\/em><\/strong>, either by posting a relevant article, or commenting on one submitted by a classmate.&nbsp; there is no penalty if you do not complete this other than <strong>missing<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>5% of your mark<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Short paper, Stuff the British Stole (20%)<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Watch on CBC Gem, two episodes of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/gem.cbc.ca\/stuff-the-british-stole\">The Stuff the British Stole<\/a><\/em>: Ep 3 \u2013 \u201cThe Crow Flies,\u201d and Ep 6 \u2013 \u201cThe Return.\u201d &nbsp;Each episode is 22 minutes long.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Various disciplines have statements or policies on ethics.&nbsp; Take a look at the International Council of Museums (ICOM) <a href=\"https:\/\/icom.museum\/en\/resources\/standards-guidelines\/code-of-ethics\/\">Code of Ethics website<\/a>, especially the <a href=\"https:\/\/icom.museum\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/110825_Checklist_print.pdf\">Checklist on Ethics of Cultural Property Ownership<\/a>.&nbsp; You can download the <a href=\"https:\/\/icom.museum\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/ICOM-code-En-web.pdf\">ICOM Code of Ethics<\/a> (2017).&nbsp; Explain how ethical considerations of today would have (or not) affected the acquisition of the items that ended up in UK museums.&nbsp; The museum plans on redeveloping the exhibit on Chinatown and the Chinese community. <strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>Choose an object on display (or suggest one) that might expand the understanding of the community.&nbsp; Explain how and why this story should be told.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Chinese objects, you can view other BC collections found in the <a href=\"https:\/\/ccap.uvic.ca\/index.php\/\">Chinese Canadian Artifacts Project<\/a> (CCAP), one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/governments\/multiculturalism-anti-racism\/chinese-legacy-bc\/legacy-projects\/historical-sites-artifacts\/artifacts-inventory\">Legacy Projects<\/a> of the BC government.&nbsp; The Nanaimo Museum and Cumberland Museum &amp; Archives collections served as the pilot for CCAP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your essay should be <strong>no more than 750 words<\/strong>, excluding references.&nbsp; others may arise during our brainstorming session.&nbsp; Students will have choice based on our discussions.&nbsp; Depending on the project, the task might be appropriate for one person or a group.&nbsp; The number of individuals involved in any one project will be variable based on estimating the amount of research involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each project will be presented to the class (10% of the 30% overall mark).&nbsp; Presentations should be no more than 15-minutes in length.&nbsp; Describe the purpose, the outcome, and the process.&nbsp; There will be a sign-up for the presentation dates, <strong>December 5 and 7<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides collecting research, I am also interested in what you learned.&nbsp;
