Objectives: To experience using Microsoft Designer & Canva, learn and practice basic features listed below:
Topics:
- Creating a new design using AI, from a template, and from scratch
- Resize to create different projects
- Insert text, shapes, illustrations, photos, and video
- Use the editor to arrange and format your design
- Inserting your own media
- Remove background or objects from images
- Create a brand kit

Activity
Using Microsoft Designer, create an 8.5” x 11” (A4 Portrait or A4 Landscape) flyer on a topic of your choice that includes the following:
- An image with the background removed
- At least one coloured shape
- A stock illustration
- At least 2 instances of text with different font formats (colour, size, face, effects…)
- A background (can be a colour or image)
When you have completed your design, please
- Click download
- Copy as Image
(Please be patient for this step. If you get a message similar to: “Designer would like to copy an image to your clipboard”, click “Allow”)
- And paste it into an email to colin.cameron@viu.ca using <Ctrl> + V.

Canva is an industry standard for designing simple graphics. It functions much like Designer with more features.
Please take some time to play with it. You will find the interface similar to Designer (Designer copied Canva’s interface), but with more capabilities.
