Week 41

October 10th // Blackout

Poinsettia are “obligate short-day” plants, meaning that they need are certain amount of longer nights for their flowering to be trigger. Spending a longer amount of time in the dark is what will make the vibrant colors of our different cultivars of Poinsettia truly come out. Ideally, nights longer than 12 hours is required for that change to happen.
To artificially impose darkness upon our crops, we use blackout curtains that cut off daylight from the inside of the greenhouse

Cultural Activity

We are setting up the ceiling blackout curtains to cover the crop from 18:00 until 8:00.
We will start lowering the side blackout curtains in the morning and at the end of the day
Additional lights will be set to be ON from 8:00 to 18:00

These settings will create an environment where the plants are subjected to a 14 hours night cycle.

We are also modifying our temperature setpoints to create a setting more closely similar to a natural day and night cycle. We will achieve that by increasing the heating target during the day, and reducing the cooling target at night
