Week 35

September 1st // Monitoring

It is important to always have an eye on your crop and it’s environment. Thankfully, the systems we use help us keep a watchful eyes on what’s happening in the greenhouse, even at a distance. If any drastic change of temperature would happen while we are away, alarms would be triggered letting us know of a possible danger to the crop.

Up and fully opened at 9:00

Week 35

August 31st // It’s a Trap!

There are multiple ways to approach pest management in a greenhouse. The choices of practices we adopt can directly impact the population of pest and the environment both inside and outside of the greenhouse. Putting traps and using beneficial insects are two examples of methods having a reduced negative impact on the environment outside the greenhouse.
Creating a physical barrier from the outside can also help, especially when certain gardening and farming activities are happening close to the greenhouse.

Cultural Activity:

The students have installed sticky pheromone traps to help control the gnats and white fly population.

Up and fully opened at 9:00AM

Humidity Min: 43.3% at 15:57
Mean 64.53%

Week 35

August 30th // Nuisances

Overcast and rainy weather signifies an increased in the climate humidity, both outside and inside the greenhouse. This sort of environment often helps the propagation of certain pest like white flies and gnats, and we have certainly observed an increase in the presence of flying undesirables in the past few days.
Thankfully, the students are prepared to install traps to help counter the invasion.

Week 35

August 29th // Let It Shine

The sunny weather of the past few weeks allowed us to mostly rely on natural sunlight for the crop,
The overcast weather we’re having this week means the plants would benefit from having additional light, and so we’ve now set up the greenhouse grow lights to turn on from 6AM to 8PM for the time being.
If the forecast is calling for a stretch of sunny days, we will adjust the settings to strictly give the plants additional light in the morning, from 6 to 8 AM, and in the evening from 6 to 8 PM.
Our goal here is to give the plants 14 hours of light.

Greenhouse Action:

Sidewalls:

Week 35

August 28th // Off With Their Heads!

Cultural Activity:

The students are pinching the plants today, a very important procedure that will encourage lateral growth and slow down the apical dominance that is natural in poinsettias. Basically making the plants more bushy.

Details: The students are pinching the plants by performing a diagonal cut (with sanitized pruning shears) above the 6th or 7th node, counting from the bottom of the stem up.
The greenhouse shade curtains above the crop will be set to 25% to avoid the sun burning the fresh wounds made from pinching the plants.
