{"id":140,"date":"2020-10-03T00:11:50","date_gmt":"2020-10-03T00:11:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/sovereigntyandgoodnessofgod\/?page_id=140"},"modified":"2020-11-03T20:59:25","modified_gmt":"2020-11-03T20:59:25","slug":"twentieth-remove-part-6","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/sovereigntyandgoodnessofgod\/removes-11-20\/twentieth-remove-part-6\/","title":{"rendered":"Twentieth Remove Part 6"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">Edited by Cheyenne Maguire<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">On Monday we came to Charlestown, where we heard that the governor of Rhode Island<sup id=\"rf1-140\"><a href=\"#fn1-140\" title=\"Rhode Island is the name of the English Colony, Charlestown is the city she is in\" rel=\"footnote\">1<\/a><\/sup> had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/send%20over#:~:text=%3A%20to%20dispatch%20across%20the%20sea,from%20one%20place%20to%20another\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/send%20over#:~:text=%3A%20to%20dispatch%20across%20the%20sea,from%20one%20place%20to%20another\">sent over<\/a><sup id=\"rf2-140\"><a href=\"#fn2-140\" title=\"sent over: to dispatch from one place to another\" rel=\"footnote\">2<\/a><\/sup>  for our daughter,<sup id=\"rf3-140\"><a href=\"#fn3-140\" title=\"Rowlandson has 3 children\" rel=\"footnote\">3<\/a><\/sup> to take care of her, being now within his jurisdiction; which should not pass without our acknowledgments. But the carts which carried <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dictionary.com\/browse\/provision?s=t\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.dictionary.com\/browse\/provision?s=t\" target=\"_blank\">provision<\/a><sup id=\"rf8-140\"><a href=\"#fn8-140\" title=\"Provision: the act of providing supplies\" rel=\"footnote\">8<\/a><\/sup> to the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/historyofmassachusetts.org\/what-was-king-philips-war\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/historyofmassachusetts.org\/what-was-king-philips-war\/\" target=\"_blank\">English army<\/a>,<sup id=\"rf9-140\"><a href=\"#fn9-140\" title=\"King Phillip&#8217;s war, also known as the &#8220;First Indian War&#8221; 1675-1676\" rel=\"footnote\">9<\/a><\/sup> being guarded, brought her with them to Dorchester, where we received her safe. Blessed be the Lord for it, for great is His power, and He can do whatsoever seemeth Him good<sup id=\"rf10-140\"><a href=\"#fn10-140\" title=\"Rowlandson is once again giving credit to God for the good deeds done by others. &#8220;Blessed be the Lord for [bringing my daughter to me] for His power is great, and he can do whatever He sees good.&#8221; (change to modern grammar to make more sense) \" rel=\"footnote\">10<\/a><\/sup> Her coming in was after this manner:<sup id=\"rf11-140\"><a href=\"#fn11-140\" title=\"She arrived after experiencing this: (Modern Grammar change) \" rel=\"footnote\">11<\/a><\/sup> she was traveling one day with the Indians, with her basket at her back; the company of Indians were got before her,<sup id=\"rf12-140\"><a href=\"#fn12-140\" title=\"&#8220;were got before her&#8221; means that they were taken by the English before she was, them being gone out of sight is a subtle way of saying they were kidnapped or killed\" rel=\"footnote\">12<\/a><\/sup> and gone out of sight, all except one squaw; she followed the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lexico.com\/definition\/squaw\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.lexico.com\/definition\/squaw\" target=\"_blank\">squaw<\/a><sup id=\"rf13-140\"><a href=\"#fn13-140\" title=\"Squaw: A North American &#8220;Indian&#8221; woman or wife, a term derived from different Algonquin dialects, recently it has been coined as derogatory due to the historical negative context around the word\" rel=\"footnote\">13<\/a><\/sup> till night, and then both of them lay down, having nothing over them but the heavens and under them but the earth.<sup id=\"rf14-140\"><a href=\"#fn14-140\" title=\"They laid on the ground without anything separating them from the cold dirt and air\" rel=\"footnote\">14<\/a><\/sup> Thus she traveled three days together, not knowing whither<sup id=\"rf15-140\"><a href=\"#fn15-140\" title=\"Whither: where\" rel=\"footnote\">15<\/a><\/sup> she was going; having nothing to eat or drink but water, and green <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.collinsdictionary.com\/us\/dictionary\/english\/hurtleberry\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.collinsdictionary.com\/us\/dictionary\/english\/hurtleberry\" target=\"_blank\">hirtle-berries<\/a>.<sup id=\"rf16-140\"><a href=\"#fn16-140\" title=\"Green huckleberries signify the time of year it is, the berries are not yet ripe enough to eat because it is still only early summer 1676, huckleberries begin to ripen at the end of July\" rel=\"footnote\">16<\/a><\/sup> At last they came into Providence, where she was kindly entertained<sup id=\"rf17-140\"><a href=\"#fn17-140\" title=\"entertained: taken care of\" rel=\"footnote\">17<\/a><\/sup> by several of that town. The Indians often said that I should never have her under twenty pounds.<sup id=\"rf18-140\"><a href=\"#fn18-140\" title=\"When holding captives, a captor would often ask for a ransom as a payment for the safe return of the captive, Rowlandson&#8217;s daughter was young, and since the young are easily influenced, captors want to keep the young and they often go for a higher price\" rel=\"footnote\">18<\/a><\/sup> But now the Lord hath brought her in upon free-cost, and given her to me the second time.<sup id=\"rf19-140\"><a href=\"#fn19-140\" title=\"Rowlandson herself was ransomed for 20 pounds\" rel=\"footnote\">19<\/a><\/sup> The Lord make us a blessing indeed, each to others.<sup id=\"rf20-140\"><a href=\"#fn20-140\" title=\"Humans are work of The Lord, thus humans are a blessing to each other\" rel=\"footnote\">20<\/a><\/sup> Now have I seen that Scripture also fulfilled,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p> &#8220;If any of thine be driven out to the outmost parts of heaven, from thence will the Lord thy God gather thee, and from thence will he fetch thee. And the Lord thy God will put all these curses upon thine enemies, and on them which hate thee, which persecuted thee&#8221;<sup id=\"rf21-140\"><a href=\"#fn21-140\" title=\"Deuteronomy 30: description of the mercy God has for Israel after the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans, these verses contain the promise of Jewish peoples taking Christian faith, the  inspiration to the Christian view of indigenous peoples.\" rel=\"footnote\">21<\/a><\/sup>  <\/p><cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianity.com\/bible\/commentary.php?com=mhc&amp;b=5&amp;c=30\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.christianity.com\/bible\/commentary.php?com=mhc&amp;b=5&amp;c=30\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(Deuteronomy 30.4-7)<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus hath the Lord brought me and mine out of that horrible pit, and hath set us in the midst of tender-hearted and compassionate Christians. It is the desire of my soul that we may walk worthy of the mercies received, and which we are receiving.<sup id=\"rf22-140\"><a href=\"#fn22-140\" title=\"Rowlandson&#8217;s dedication to her faith through her captivity is the signifier of her worthiness. She believes she deserves the kindness she receives because she is a good Christian, she does not accept that some people have genuine empathy for others. Then we removed from Mr. Shepard&#8217;s, those cordial friends, and went to Boston, where we continued about three-quarters of a year.<sup id=\"rf25-140\"><a href=\"#fn25-140\" title=\"Boston is also supposedly the place that Rowlandson stays for the rest of her life\" rel=\"footnote\">25<\/a><\/sup> Still the Lord went along with us, and provided graciously for us. I thought it somewhat strange to set up house-keeping with bare walls; but as Solomon says, &#8220;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Ecclesiastes+10%3A19&amp;version=GNV\" target=\"_blank\">Money answers all things<\/a>&#8221;<sup id=\"rf26-140\"><a href=\"#fn26-140\" title=\"Ecclesiastes 10:19\" rel=\"footnote\">26<\/a><\/sup> and that we had through the benevolence of Christian friends, some in this town, and some in that, and others; and some from England; that in a little time we might look, and see the house furnished with love.<sup id=\"rf27-140\"><a href=\"#fn27-140\" title=\"In Ecclesiastes 10, Solomon is talking about the arrogance and ignorance of leaders that find their value only in materials and how one small aspect can ruin what is much larger. So when Rowlandson mentions that &#8220;Money answers all things&#8221; she is really referencing the fact that she should not look to material goods for a sense of belonging\" rel=\"footnote\">27<\/a><\/sup> The Lord hath been exceeding good to us in our low estate, in that when we had neither house nor home, nor other necessaries, the Lord so moved the hearts of these and those towards us, that we wanted neither food, nor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/raiment\">raiment<\/a><sup id=\"rf28-140\"><a href=\"#fn28-140\" title=\"Raiment: Archaic, Literary, meaning garments or clothing\" rel=\"footnote\">28<\/a><\/sup> for ourselves or ours: &#8220;There is a Friend which sticketh closer than a Brother&#8221; (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Proverbs+18%3A24&amp;version=GNV\" target=\"_blank\">Proverbs 18.24<\/a>)<sup id=\"rf29-140\"><a href=\"#fn29-140\" title=\"Proverbs 18:24: &#8220;A man\u00a0&lt;em&gt;that hath&lt;\/em&gt;\u00a0friends,\u00a0&lt;em&gt;ought&lt;\/em&gt;\u00a0to show himself friendly: for a friend is nearer\u00a0than a brother. i.e. The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb, the bonds we create in life are stronger than the ones we are born into\" rel=\"footnote\">29<\/a><\/sup> And how many such friends have we found, and now living amongst?
