Vanessa

This spoken letter is for all Indigenous people who have been the victim of systemic discrimination in health care in any way, shape or form. I am addressing all who have power and authority within the health care system capable of implementing the recommendations set out by Indigenous leaders and organizations.

All pictures and videos were recorded by me from within the territory of the Tla’amin First Nation which I reside on. I feel that nature is so important for health, healing and wellness and felt it was appropriate as the background for my spoken letter. The grey, rainy image playing during stories of systemic racism in health care. The Sun comes out as I speak about strength and resiliency from Indigenous Peoples’ starting with the fight for implementation of Jordan’s Principle. I wanted to focus on resiliency and growth. To do so I looked at the calls to action set out by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada as well as the Turpel-Lafond report “In Plain Sight” and found some recommendations from both that correspond with each other. As we are hearing the recommendations, I have added some Indigenous drumming to signify that these words spoken are coming from Indigenous Voices. I would like to acknowledge all the artists that I used for sound effects and background music.
