I have been a professor at Vancouver Island University in the Earth Science (formerly the Geology) Department since 2002. My main areas of expertise include: structural geology, environmental geology, mineral resources and cave/karst landscapes.

Since being at VIU I have taught a wide range of courses including:

  • SCIE 252 – Dinosaurs, Disasters and the Dynamic Earth (an introductory geology course for non-scientists)
  • GEOL 111 – Understanding Planet Earth (an introduction to the planet earth and physical geology)
  • GEOL 112 – Discovering Earth’s History (an introduction to the history of planet earth and geologic time)
  • GEOL 115 – Laboratory and Field Studies in Earth Science (an introduction to hands on geology)
  • GEOG 212 – Earth Environments (a course on physical geography)
  • GEOL 200 – Sedimentology and Stratigraphy (a course on sedimentary rocks)
  • GEOL 202 – Earth Structures (fundamentals of structural geology and global tectonic processes)
  • GEOL 300 – Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology (an in depth look at igneous/metamorphic rocks)
  • GEOL 301 – Caves and Karst Landscapes
  • GEOL 302 – Mineral Resources (an introduction to mineral resources and the methods used to explore for them)
  • GEOL 312 – Environmental Geology (an examination of how humans interact with the geological aspects of our environment)
  • GEOL 390 – Special Field Studies (Canadian Rockies and Iceland)
  • GEOL 412 – Climate Change (Past, Present and Future)
  • GEOL 470 – Special Topics in Earth Science (a seminar course on geologic hazards, earthquakes of BC and global tectonics)
  • GEOL 490 – Directed Studies in Earth Science (student based research projects)
