{"id":39,"date":"2020-10-22T16:40:03","date_gmt":"2020-10-22T16:40:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/onlineassessmentquilt\/?p=39"},"modified":"2022-09-28T22:14:17","modified_gmt":"2022-09-28T22:14:17","slug":"how-to-use-and-understand-field-instruments-without-actually-having-the-instruments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.viu.ca\/tipsfromthetrenches\/2020\/10\/22\/how-to-use-and-understand-field-instruments-without-actually-having-the-instruments\/","title":{"rendered":"Using and understanding field instruments without actually having the instruments (Jeff Lewis and Michele Patterson)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Assessment Challenge:<\/strong> How can geography students become familiar with essential tools of the trade&#8211;field instruments, if we can\u2019t get the instruments to the students?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Solution:<\/strong> Have each student create an instructional video to teach the rest of the class how to use two specific field instruments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although students were not able to manipulate the actual instruments (e.g., GPS devices) they were still required to demonstrate an understanding of the tools and their uses. In order to satisfy this criteria of the course, Jeff Lewis and Michele Patterson created an assignment in which students researched and recreated actual tools, and then presented instructional videos on those tools.  For example, one student built his own instruments with duct tape, hockey sticks, push pins and toilet paper rolls, and then demonstrated their use with blankets, cardboard arrows and gum boots.
