1. Check your computer hardware and connected equipment (like headsets and webcams)

  • IT Services has a list of internet, hardware, and software recommendations here: Technology Recommendations Webpage
  • CIEL has a system check for using VIULearn here: VIULearn Computer Check
  • If your computer hardware won’t work for your courses you can:
    • Borrow a laptop or access a computer through the VIU Library: Library Equipment Loans
    • Access a computer on campus: VIU Computer Lab Locations for Students
    • Purchase new hardware using a student discount: Technology Discounts Webpage

2. Setup your student computer account

  • You must have a computer account to access VIULearn, it is not the same as your student record account

3. Test Teams on your computer, tablet, or smartphone

4. Access and orientation to VIULearn

  • Access
    • Go to https://learn.viu.ca and click on “Go to VIULearn” to sign in with your student computer account
  • Orientation

5. Check your computer software

  • IT Services has a list of internet, hardware, and software recommendations here: Technology Recommendations Webpage.
  • Make sure to check the following:
    • Anti-virus protection for your device
    • Office or Word – free for students
    • PDF Reader – free
  • If your instructor says you need software and you do not have it:
    • Check the list of free or remotely accessible software here: List of Software for VIU Students
    • Get some software for free, and check here for student deals: Technology Discounts Webpage
