Mapping the Invisible

Teaching and Supervision

Teaching Responsibilities

I am currently teaching part-time at VIU. Having taught all but two of the courses in the Advanced Diploma in GIS Applications, I am easily able to fill in when my colleagues go on leave or take sabbatical. The following table documents the courses that I have taught in reverse chronological order:

List of courses taught

Student Supervision

Graduate

Master of GIS Applications Student (2018-2020)

I had the pleasure of sharing (with Dr. Jerome Lesemann) the supervision of a Master of Geographic Information Systems student, who was performing a comparison of Geographic Object-Based Image Analysis (GEOBIA) and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) classifications of data for the classification of Digital Elevation Models to identify landforms.

Undergraduate

Advanced Diploma in GIS Applications Practicum Student (Jan. – Aug. 2014)

This student helped on a side problem with my Ph.D. in 2014. His task was to help solve and create code for a question that had to do with how far could people see features in Colliery Dam Park. Whereas DEMs do a fine job of calculating the visibility of land that is unvegetated, in areas such as Colliery Dam Park, the thick tree cover means that such models significantly overestimate the distance that can be seen. The student’s job was to use LiDAR data to identify the tops of trees in the canopy, and using measurements of the average tree trunk size, estimate how much tree trunks limit visibility. His work was presented at the ESRI User Conference in Victoria, BC, on April 8, 2014.

Geography Work-Op Students (Sept. 2011- Dec. 2011 and Jan. 2012 – Apr. 2012)

Both students assisted with data collection for my Ph.D. research, helping to staff the data collection booth, conduct surveys, and to set up and take down the booth.
