Nanaimo Aboriginal Center is a not-for-profit inclusive organization in Nanaimo, British Columbia, which has created programs to redress the colonial oppression that remains part of Canadian society. This spoken letter represents gratitude for their learning center curriculums, which work to implement many of the 2015 Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Educational Recommendations. More specifically, from the lens of an immigrant settler, the writer demonstrates how education can result in a deeper understanding and respect for the oral histories, culture, and language of Canada’s diverse First Peoples. Illustrated in part through class learning in the experiences of Nisaika Kum’Tuks Learning Center’s work towards resurgence and respect of Indigenous identities. Therefore, hoping to highlight further the responsibility all Canadians have in learning the strengths held in shared Indigenous Knowledge and the value of its incorporation into educational curricula. -Anonymous
