About Me

Experience

I have worked as an Instructor in the Faculty of Academic and Career Preparation (ACP) at Vancouver Island University (VIU) since September 2017. In October 2021, I became the chair of Adult Basic Education, Foundations for Success, and Literacy programs for Nanaimo campus.

I’ve been lucky enough to teach Adult Basic Education (ABE) Biology 11 & 12 and Chemistry 11 & 12 in both blended and face-to-face formats. I love teaching my fully-online course FNFS 103: Succeeding Online: Tools and Technology for Learning. I also have experience teaching computer skills in a formal course (COST 030) and in workshops. In Spring 2024, I had the opportunity to teach in the Faculty of Education as well, teaching two sections of EDPB 531: Instructional Design: Application of Educational Technology, Part II.

Since joining VIU in 2012, I have also supported  faculty and learners using educational technologies. I have held roles at the Centre for Innovation and Excellence in Learning, IT Service’s Helpdesk team, and as a Faculty and Student Digital Support Person in ACP.

Service

I have participated in provincial articulation of ABE Science in the Biology sub-committee since 2019, and became the co-chair of ABE Steering in 2022. In these roles I have actively engaged with articulation group discussions, especially around the COVID-19 pivot to online and remote delivery. I am currently engaged in the Policies and Procedures ad-hoc committee of ABE Steering, as well as supporting a update to the ABE Steering Moodle site hosted by BCCAT. In 2023 I was recognized for my work on the ABE Articulation Steering Committee with the BCCAT Rising Star Award.

I have served as a member of the Academic and Career Preparation Faculty Council since June 2021. During my time in that role, I have participated in the ACP Online Strategic Plan committee and Subject Support Leader committee. I have also co-chaired the ACP Bylaws committee, which completed updating and approving our Faculty bylaws in 2022.

In October 2021, I was voted in as the ACP Faculty representative on VIU’s Curriculum Committee (a standing committee of Senate). I have engaged in discussions around new courses and programs, and changes to current courses and programs at VIU. In May 2023, I was voted in as vice-Chair of Curriculum Committee. I have submitted motions to improve workflows of this committee, and have been an active participant in Senate governance review.

Education

I completed a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Education combined degree program at the University of Alberta in 2011. Throughout my degrees I worked at a laboratory technician in a plant genetics lab, as well as tutoring students in grades 7 through 12 in sciences and math.

In 2015 I completed a post-graduate diploma – the Online Learning and Teaching Diploma (OLTD). If you are interested in the work I completed, please check out the “OLTD ePortfolio” link in the menu.

After completing the OLTD program, I completed a major project and process paper to complete my Master of Education in Educational Leadership. My process paper is available here: M.Ed. Major Project.
