This video is my response to the missing and murdered Indigenous women inquiry. This was an incredibly difficult project to undertake and I thought about it for a week before starting. It was an honor and privilege to be able to reach out and respond to the report in this way. The perspective that I had prior to reading the report was one that was formed by a colonial stereotype so reading the report completely changed my worldview. Empathy and compassion now seep out of my pores for indigenous women and girls. Colonization has been negatively impacting indigenous women and girls lives for too long. Reconciliation is something that needs to be incorporated into every aspect of our lives if we want something to change. I spoke to Indigenous people and researched Indigenous history to make sure I did not offend anyone. The background music is Indigenous chanting and drumming, and the song is called the Equality song. Having it in the background was important, because I am advocating for equality for Indigenous peoples. I wanted my video to talk about the history of Indigenous women and the horrors they have faced. I also wanted to include how strong Indigenous peoples are. Despite all efforts to destroy their population, Indigenous people stand. I begin my video with some of the history on the issue. The next portion of the video is harrowing statistics regarded to Indigenous women. I wanted to talk about the resilience of Indigenous peoples which is why I included photos from marches and protests. Including photos of marches and protests was important as it is an example on how to strengthen political will to implement the calls to action. The calls to action outlined in the report were upsetting, and it was difficult to choose one to talk about but I chose the one about children being removed due to poverty because it was the one that spoke to me the most. Discussing pow wow’s, tribal journeys and orange shirt day were all important because each one highlighted the resurgence of Indigenous people. Participating in events such as orange shirt day is also an example of an action that strengthens people’s responsibility to reconciliation so including it was important.
