I wrote a poem to express my own views on the topic of colonization and the effects of violence against Indigenous women and girls. To accompany the poem is a video of me walking in a Saskatchewan landscape. I did not show my face so that I essentially represent any girl. Although you cannot see the weather, that day was freezing and I felt me being out in the cold in a dress represented the vulnerability of these women and girls. I am running away to represent both freedom and the idea of running away from constricting and racist systems, views, education, and policies.
The last section I featured my son. I felt the innocent of a child was an appropriate representation of the innocence of these women and girls. As well, I think it is important we raise the next generation to know about the MMIWG report and know about the violence that exists in the world. For then, the young people can become advocates and allies for a better tomorrow.
