What are the management priorities and academic opportunities for Woodlot 0020 identified by Stakeholders, Educational Leaders, and the Public? Public survey research will help guide the next update to the Woodlot Management Plan and help to identify educational opportunities for greater utilization of this amazing resource right in our back yard.

  1. Hi Chris, sounds like you are hoping to collect data from the public…how do you think you’ll reach the public? What strategies will you use to distribute your survey?

    1. Covid friendly online survey – but hope to compliment that with a brochure mail out to the postal code surrounding the woodlot… or any other ideas others may have???

  2. Hi Chris, it is so great to see your initial ideas from last year coming together!

What about a adding a QR code to key recruitment sites in the woodlot, surrounding area, in your brochure, etc? That way people can scan it with their phones and complete the survey when they get back from hiking in the woodlot.

  3. great idea. thank you 🙂 and I am weaving in more of a learning / academic focus as you suggested earlier 🙂

  4. Great idea! There are so many educational opportunities waiting to happen with this beautiful space.

  5. It’s such a great resource as you mention Chris. Are there any opportunities for partnerships with local high schools or even elementary schools? It seems to me that the more the land can be shown to be having a positive benefit for the community, the more likely stakeholders will be to rally behind the various initiatives you are planning.

  6. Chris, I need your woodlot closer so I can use it for my students to explore for outdoor education. Not sure if you need anymore traffic though. Great topic and such a wonderful piece of nature to be the care taker of.

  7. Hi Chris

Great video! I loved the photos.

I think it is crucial to involve all stakeholders on how to manage the woodlot. Merv Wilkinson’s experiences at Wildwood was an incredible example of how to manage a woodlot sustainably to both generate revenue and maintain the ecosystem. I would love to see something like this approach considered for this woodlot and as it could provide many educational, recreational and even spiritual purposes for the broader VIU community.
    Take care

  8. My first thoughts are how can the space can be used in the MEDL program? Anyway, I am super curious to to hear what different stake holders would say. Are there already existing restrictions for the space? Would You provide options for potential land uses or would it be open? Would certain stake holders voices have larger input? I have many questions… great video, I love your classroom!

  9. Hi Chris. I enjoyed your video. Great question and looking for feedback is a great start to getting answers to your question. I agree with Kristi there is a lot to learn from Wildwood. Maintaining the ecosystem is crucial and having input from an environmental perspective as well as local Indigenous knowledge keepers may be an idea? I look forward to seeing your final thesis.

  10. HI Chris,
So great to get students and teachers outside for learning. How that can change the mood for the day! I hope your project keeps this soil active as a user friendly lot. I wish we all had access to such a place for our students. If one looks hard enough in their own backyard, something may appear.

  11. Hi Chris, I love this idea! I’ve lived in a bustling city for five years and I’ve seen how being in touch with nature can be lost. So great initiative to continue that engagement!

    Thanks fo sharing!

  12. What an awesome resource. It seems like it is in great hands!! Keep up the wonderful work!

  13. Hi Chris, I completely love that you care so deeply about the human voice attached to the decisions about this lot. Capturing a breadth of representative voices in an effort to help identify (and plan) the lot’s present & future uses is very interesting to me. I look forward to hearing more about your research plan at your upcoming session!

    Sincerely,
    Bonnie
