This spoken letter video is intended to raise awareness and call for action for all of us, asa society, as a community, as human beings, to recognize, and act upon the systemic racism that is present in the health care system directed at the Indigenous Peoples of Canada. While I was thinking about this project, I came across a Facebook post by a dear friend,Mel, who bravely noted that she was finally able to write down her experience of sterilization. My inspiration to focus my spoken letter on the coerced sterilization of Indigenous women was inspired by Mel’s post and experience. Through my conversation with Mel, I was able to learn more about her experiences, that many other indigenous women share. Her resilience, bravery, courage, and vulnerability in sharing and educating me will remain an important part of my quest for change and action. The sad truth is that this is not history, this is the present. Coerced sterilization ofIndigenous women is still taking place today. It is the 21st century, and systemic discrimination and racism is still present as ever before. It is shocking and disheartening to learn that it is more common than we think.Through conversations, we can learn, educate, and raise awareness. I, myself was not aware of forced sterilization taking place in the present, until I came across Mel’s post. With this new learning, I hope to raise awareness and be an advocate and an ally for Indigenous people who continue to face systemic racism within the health care system. It is important to acknowledge that simply pointing the finger at the health care system will not resolve the problem. We all have a role to play. We need to call for action and change to be better as a society, to work towards reconciliation, cultural understanding, and respect for humankind. Anonymous.
