Annii Boozhoo. My name is Danielle Chartrand, and I am Anishinaabe kwe. I come from a beautiful place called Skownan, Manitoba, where my ancestors were connected to the land and the teachings. But now live in the Comox Valley and would like to acknowledge that I am on the traditional unceded territories of the Puntledge, I’ikson and K’omoks people. I believe that I must start my letter by acknowledging how Systemic racism in health care is directly tied to a legacy of colonialism and racism in Canada; before looking at the future, we must look into the past and find the root causes. The stories I shared in my spoken letter were very close and personal; some of my closest friends haven’t even heard them. I shared personal stories to show how Residential Schools set the tone for how some Indigenous people perceive health care due to traumatic experiences and showed what happens when people get singled storied; when someone gets singled story, it’s easy for others to associate stereotypes to them and could affect the care the patient receives if the health care professional has a bias.
