This spoken letters video is in response to how society tries to dictate a person’s culture, even within the health care system. The incident that is mentioned within the video was something that I have witnessed myself in a health care setting, so therefore I chose to remain anonymous. Since I live in a community with only one hospital, due to confidentiality, I only described the basics of the event. I start the letter with an Indigenous poem by Tommy Pico, which spoke to me as a symbol on how society tries to say how a person should live their life and ignore their culture and heritage. The middle of the letter, I talk about what I witnessed and how culture is important in Healthcare for a person’s treatment. I wanted to end the letter with an Indigenous prayer by Steven Rushing wind so while watching the trees and nature in the background, the person watching the video may feel connected back to mother earth and reflect one’s own culture. I want those that hear my letter to self reflect on how a person’s culture is important, that culture is how a person will make big decisions about how they live, their health, and how they want to die.
