Coaching Education

Coaching Association of Canada

After I stepped away from the massive time commitment of Collegiate coaching in 2001, a priority became giving back to the sport in the form of Coaching Education.  Over the past 25+ years, I have led countless National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) courses for aspiring Volleyball coaches, as well as coaching clinics on a variety of topics designed for either grassroots or high performance athletes.  I am a trained Learning Facilitator and Coach Evaluator for both Development and Advanced Development level coaching, as well as numerous multi-sport modules such as:

  • Make Ethical Decisions
  • Teaching and Learning
  • Planning a Practice
  • Basic Mental Skills
  • Nutrition
  • Design a Basic Sport Program
  • Fundamental Movement Skills

Good Morning Rick,  I just wanted to thank you for the enjoyable hours you facilitated this weekend. You have a unique ability to invite the beliefs and knowledge of a group of individuals with varied skills/backgrounds and make them feel worthy, important and appreciated. Going into this weekend I was concerned about ‘knowing enough’ as a dinosaur of the sport but soon realized, as our club has tried to foster and support, that coaching is about continuous learning and networking with other like minded who love our sport.

Feedback from a Development Coach – NCCP course, January, 2017.

Currently, my emphasis with Coach Education in Canada is being a Coach Evaluator for Volleyball Canada, and their coach certification program. My role is to observe developing coaches and provide feedback on their technical and tactical planning and delivery to athletes. I also provide mentorship and support for coaches during the entire certification process.

“Just to let you know, Rick Bevis attended my practice for my evaluation to achieve my certification.   I provided him with all documentation required: ie. copy of practice plan, Emergency Activation Plan, self assessment, etc.   Rick was so helpful through this process, he is an amazing coach and mentor and had a tonne of advice and tips for my development.  I cannot say enough how awesome he was the other night!!!”

FIVB Coaches Courses

In January of 2020, I was appointed a FIVB Instructor, by the FIVB Coaching and Technical Commission.  This is an exciting opportunity to share and gain knowledge with new and experienced Volleyball leaders from around the globe.  I am an Instructor for both Indoor Volleyball and Beach Volleyball courses. Coaching courses to date that I have led have been hosted by the, St Lucia, Jamaican and Trinidad and Tobago Volleyball Federations, with participants from 25+ Countries.

In August, 2024, I had the privilege of facilitating a unique hybrid FIVB beach volleyball coaching course in conjunction with a U21 high-performance training camp for the participants of the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association U21 Championships. Hosted by the St Kitts and Nevis Volleyball and Olympic Associations, and supported through Olympic Solidarity, this event brought together coaches from 15 and teams from 11 Nations, to develop and prepare coaches and athletes towards participation in future FIVB age-class World Championships.

Feedback from Participants – FIVB Level II course hosted by the Jamaican Volleyball Federation, May, 2022

  • Thank you Rick!  A great course and learnt a few different ways to approach coaching that I will apply to my coaching now.
  • Thank you, Coach!  I really enjoyed the course with you, and I have definitely gained quite a bit of knowledge about advancing my coaching skills and perspective of the game.
  •  Thanks for the time spent engaging with us coaches and imparting valuable information to us.  Personally, I benefitted from the sessions and will be using the knowledge gained to enhance the game of volleyball.  Again, thank you.

Feedback from Participants – FIVB Beach Volleyball course hosted by the Trinidad & Tobago Volleyball Federation, March, 2024

“I would like to congratulate you for putting great efforts and conducting such an amazing course. Your patience and understanding was amazing. Without such personalities I would not have been able to find the mental strength to continue. It was an honor to be part of these sessions and I am looking forward to attending any of your trainings in future as well.”

I would like to warmly thank you for conducting such an amazing training. I must say that the training was very informative and was quite joyful at the same time. The way you presented yourself, your topic and the references you used were simply amazing. I was able to learn a lot.
