Coaching Education

Coaching Association of Canada

After I stepped away from the massive time commitment of Collegiate coaching in 2001, a priority became giving back to the sport in the form of Coaching Education.  Over the past 20+ years, I have led countless National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) courses for aspiring Volleyball coaches, as well as coaching clinics on a variety of topics designed for either grassroots or high performance athletes.  I am a trained Learning Facilitator for both Development and Advanced Development level coaching, as well as numerous multi-sport modules such as:

  • Make Ethical Decisions
  • Teaching and Learning
  • Planning a Practice
  • Basic Mental Skills
  • Nutrition
  • Design a Basic Sport Program
  • Fundamental Movement Skills

Good Morning Rick,  I just wanted to thank you for the enjoyable hours you facilitated this weekend. You have a unique ability to invite the beliefs and knowledge of a group of individuals with varied skills/backgrounds and make them feel worthy, important and appreciated. Going into this weekend I was concerned about ‘knowing enough’ as a dinosaur of the sport but soon realized, as our club has tried to foster and support, that coaching is about continuous learning and networking with other like minded who love our sport.

FIVB Coaches Courses

In January of 2020, I was appointed a FIVB Instructor, by the FIVB Coaching and Technical Commission.  This is an exciting opportunity to share and gain knowledge with new and experienced Volleyball leaders from around the globe.  Coaching courses to date that I have been involved with have been hosted by the Gibraltar, St Lucian, and Jamaican Volleyball Federations, with participants from 25+ Countries.

  • Thank you Rick!  A great course and learnt a few different ways to approach coaching that I will apply to my coaching now.
  • Thank you, Coach!  I really enjoyed the course with you, and I have definitely gained quite a bit of knowledge about advancing my coaching skills and perspective of the game.
  •  Thanks for the time spent engaging with us coaches and imparting valuable information to us.  Personally, I benefitted from the sessions and will be using the knowledge gained to enhance the game of volleyball.  Again, thank you.

All of the above blends well with my teaching at Vancouver Island University.  I lead related courses as part of my workload; Leadership in Sport and Physical Activity, Coaching Practicum and multiple Volleyball analysis courses.
